Who we are
Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church has served Jesus Christ and the people of Kingston since half a century before Confederation (July 1, 1867) which created Canada. The year 2017 will be our 200th Anniversary for which we are grateful to God.
We have been served by 11 Ministers and several staff members during our storied history. This is the founding congregation for a theological college which grew into the world-famous Queens University. Sir John A. MacDonald, who was raised as a child and as an adult was active as a professing member of St. Andrew's, became the first Prime Minister of Canada and, incidentally, seconded the motion of this congregation to create Queen's.
We are urban, downtown, warm-hearted and open-minded. We welcome and embrace thoughtful skeptics, true believers, doubters distinguished by the quality of their questions and sinners like ourselves who have the potential of being saved by the undeserved favour of God. We believe: in God's general revelation in creation, in God's specific revelation as recorded in the Bible, and in God's special revelation through Jesus Christ who is One with the Father and the Spirit.
We think of the Church as the living body of the Living Lord. We know that the Church is a world-sized community of which we are but a part. We believe that the Church is both biblically and historically informed; the revealing of God in the Bible is lived out in over 2000 years of Christian witness and service.
We respect and honour the past, we live and move and have our being in the everyday present, and we move toward the future with confidence that God is the God of history, who is able to work all things together for those who love God.
