Who we are

Founded in 1957, 22nd Street Baptist is celebrating nearly 60 years of reaching Tucson and beyond for Jesus. Starting with a small chapel and growing as the neighborhood around us grew, 22nd Street was never satisfied with simply building a bigger church. Over the years, we've been a part of starting or supporting nine church plants while creating new ministries to help us reach the community around us.

We believe God is deeply in love with people and wants them to know Him and His amazing plans for their lives. We also believe it's our role as a church and as believers to do all we can to share this message of hope and love with everyone we can. To fulfill this role, we have embraced the vision to develop disciples who impact the world with the good news of Jesus Christ.

The three main elements of our vision are:

Sharing the Good News of Jesus - One of the last instructions Jesus gave His disciples was to "go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation" [Mark 16:15]. The good news of forgiveness, hope, and eternal life is at the heart of why we exist as a church.

Impacting the World - Just as a rock tossed in a pond sends ripples expanding outward in all directions, our goal is to help spread the good news throughout Tucson, across the US, and around the world.

Develop Disciples - Accomplishing this vision will take believers who are fully surrendered to Christ and God's call on their life. We know that not everyone is at that place; therefore, we want to help people move from their present spiritual condition, to full devotion to Christ.

While these may look like typical elements of a church vision - evangelism, missions and discipleship - we know there is nothing typical about a church that is fully committed to being used by God. We claim the promise of 1 Corinthians 2:9 that says "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him."

22nd Street Baptist Church Q&A

Question: What should I wear?

Answer: We believe God cares more about what's on the inside of a person than the outside; so we don't make a big deal about what people wear to church. If you're comfortable in blue jeans, wear them. If you like to get a little more dressed up, that's fine too.

Question: Is there something for my kids?

Answer: Absolutely! We have a fantastic children's ministry called KidZone that ministers to kids from birth through 5th grade. Kids meet during Connect Group at 9:45 AM and for Junior Church during the worship time at 11:00 AM.

Students 6th through 12th grades meet in small groups called 'Connect Groups' at 9:30 AM and starting January 12, 2025, on Sunday evenings at 4:30 PM for a time of fun, fellowship, and Bible study.

Question: What's the music like?

Answer: Worship here is a celebration. It's lively and energetic at times; but also, can be quiet and passionate. Our worship style is a blend of the most current worship songs as well as the songs we've loved for decades. Noah Battles, our Worship Pastor, does a terrific job of creating worship experiences preparing our hearts to be changed by the truths of God's word.

Question: What's the preaching like?

Answer: The great thing about the Bible is that although it is thousands of years old, the truths contained within its pages are just as relevant today as when God inspired its writing. Ashley Evans, our Senior Pastor, strives to communicate these truths in a clear and understandable manner. The messages usually come in series of 3-5 weeks and topics ranging from studies of certain books of the Bible to dealing with life’s issues such as parenting, finances, marriage, etc.

As Pastor, he’s responsible for leading the church to embrace and live out our mission of Pointing People to Jesus.

Ashley spent his childhood, teens, and college years growing up in different parts of Florida, California, and Alabama. During his high school and college years, he lived in Mobile, Alabama where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Mobile. He attended seminary at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas where he earned his Masters of Divinity.

He and Briggette have been married since 1993 and have three wonderful kids who all know and love Jesus and have each found ways to serve Him in ministry. While Ashley is thankful for the experiences and challenges of moving around frequently while growing up, he’s glad he and Briggette have found a place they love here in Wildcat country.   Edit
