Ascension Church History
A Brief History of Ascension
The land on which Ascension Church is built was acquired in 1954 by the Archdiocese of Hartford on the recommendation of interested local residents. Consisting of 27 acres, the tract of land was the former Benham Farm on Dunbar Hill Road.
After an enthusiastic letter writing campaign by many residents, Archbishop Henry J. O'Brien established Ascension Parish and appointed Rev. John F. Cotter as pastor on September 14, 1964. Daily Masses were then offered in the chapel. Over the next four years, Our Lady of Mount Carmel offered their facilities for Sacraments and funerals. As time passed, it became evident that the Ascension family needed a home of their own.
A dynamic group of men and women were anxious to start building their church and the Ascension Building Committee was formed and a Building Fund Campaign begun. Fundraisers were held, the Building Committee and parish members worked closely with the the architect. A basic design was decided upon and an artist's rendering showed what the new church would look like. Soon after, ground was broken and construction began.
Ascension Church as we know it today was completed and the inaugural Mass was celebrated September 8, 1968.
More than 50 years after it's inception, Ascension Parish continues to serve the spiritual needs of the community.

Give me a steadfast heart
Give me, O Lord, a steadfast heart which no unworthy thought can drag downwards; an unconquered heart which no tribulation can wear out; an upright heart which no unworthy purpose may tempt aside. Bestow upon me also, O Lord my God, understanding to know you, diligence to seek you, wisdom to find you, and a faithfulness that may finally embrace you; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
