Birsay Harray & Sandwick Church History
The current parish of Birsay, Harray & Sandwick is the end result of the amalgamation of the three original parishes, a process that was completed about 20 years ago. The Session and congregation behave very much as one parish, the old parishes remaining merely as geographical districts.
The amalgamation process involved the redundancy of 4 church buildings, and rather than retain one building, it was decided to build a new church, located centrally in Dounby. This was completed and opened in 2012. The old church buildings were sold.
Unitary constitution - BHS has a unitary constitution, consisting of 21 elders and 6 congregational members. The Kirk Session meets regularly, with sub teams taking responsibility for Mission, Pastoral Care, Fundraising, & Fabric/property.

I want Thy plan, O God
I want Thy plan, O God, for my life. May I be happy and contented whether in the homeland or on the foreign field; whether married or alone, in happiness or sorrow, health or sickness, prosperity or adversity - I want Thy plan, O God, for my life. I want it; oh, I want it.
