Blowing Cave Baptist Church History

Blowing Cave Baptist Church and Blowing Cave School shared the same building from 1889 until the school was discontinued.

Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Dockery and Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Frances sold land to Sevier County on which to build a school March 15, 1889. The county built a log structure and called it Blowing Cave School, but the people in the community agreed to also use it for a church.

In 1910, the old log house was replaced by a new building, and it too was used for school and for church. In the early thirties, the school house burned and a new building once again replaced the old, both being used for school and church. When the county decided to discontinue school, they leased the building and grounds to the Blowing Cave Baptist Church for 99 years for the sum of one dollar.

Early leadership, some of whom still are active leaders at Blowing Cave, include:

Pastors: Reverends Julius Whaley, Robert Maples, and Eugene Smelcer. Sunday School Superintendents: John Dockery, C. A. Lewis, Bill B. Huskey Music Directors: Wilma Mottern, David Tim McCarter, Barbara Ivey Treasurer: Ernestine Lewis Chairman of Deacons: Eugene Mottern, Ode Hatcher, John Dockery Church Clerks: Diana Norwood, John Dockery Woman’s Missionary Union Director: Betty Hatcher

The Sevier County Baptist Association received Blowing Cave Baptist Church into the fellowship of the Association October 6, 1972. John and Flora Dockery were Messengers to that meeting of the Association.

The pastor is Reverend James Huskey. Information was supplied by John Dockery.

The power of Christian prayer submit yourself to Him
The will of God for your life is simply that you submit yourself to Him each day and say, "Father, Your will for today is mine. Your pleasure for today is mine. Your work for today is mine. I trust You to be God. You lead me today and I will follow."
