Who we are
Unitarian Universalists are thinkers and doers.
We are brave, curious, and compassionate; and diverse in faith, history, and spirituality.
We are people of many beliefs and backgrounds: people with a religious background, people with none, people who believe in a God, people who don’t, and people who let the mystery be.
We are Unitarian Universalist and Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Humanist, Jewish, Muslim, Pagan, atheist and agnostic, believers in God, and more.
We are aligned in our desire to make a difference for the good. We have a track record of standing on the side of love, justice, and peace.
We are people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. We have been on the forefront of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer inclusion for more than 40 years.
We welcome you as you are: your whole self, with all your truths and your doubts, your worries and your hopes.
Whoever you love, whatever you believe, we invite you to join us on this extraordinary adventure of faith.

First Unitarian Church of Cleveland History
Since our founding in January 1867 as the First Unitarian Society of Cleveland, our church has been a force for liberal religion in the Cleveland area. In 1932, we changed our name to First Unitarian Church of Cleveland, following a merger with All Souls Universalist Church of Cleveland. The merger made our church a Unitarian Universalist congregation 30 years before the official formation of the Unitarian Universalist Association.
In recent years, the congregation has become a leader in sustainability and ecological issues, having become officially designated a Green Sanctuary by the UUA, and building a Permaculture Garden. In 2012, our 11,000-watt solar array installed. The solar array currently supplies 90 percent of the power used by the church.

With us night and morning
By gracious powers so wonderfully sheltered, and confidently waiting come what may, we know that God is with us night and morning, and never fails to greet us each new day. Yet is this heart by its old foe tormented, still evil days bring burdens hard to bear; Oh, give our frightened souls the sure salvation for which, O Lord, You taught us to prepare. And when this cup You give is filled to brimming with bitter suffering, hard to understand, we take it thankfully and without trembling, out of so good and so beloved a hand. Yet when again in this same world You give us the joy we had, the brightness of Your Sun, we shall remember all the days we lived through, and our whole life shall then be Yours alone.
