Who we are
We are an urban ministry church in the heart of downtown Vallejo, CA. We have a diverse congregation and are always welcoming new people that want to make a difference in their life and in the lives of our friends and neighbors, through the love of God.
On the last two Saturdays of the month, we offer you a hot meal and a time to sit and relax with other Community members, our Pastor, and friends and neighbors. You are welcome to join us for good food and conversation.
We have an UpTown Closet ministry which offers gently worn clothes for sale at very reasonable prices, every Friday and Saturday from 11 am - 4: 00 pm.
Sunday Worship Service is at 10:00 am. We have a vibrant Children's ministry program. Adult Sunday School starts at 9:00 am in the Heritage Room, just off of Sonoma Blvd., easy entrance and access.

I am Reverend Sandra V. Sanders-West, the appointed Senior Pastor of First UMC Vallejo since July, 2015. I am very happy to be appointed to nurture the members and friends of First UMC, as we praise our Lord and Savior, the triumvirate Redeemer. God is good, all the time… and all the time, God is good!
Born and educated in Raleigh, North Carolina, I am extremely honored to have southern roots. My early years were spent attending Martin Street Baptist Church where I was baptized, by dunking, at eight years of age. I am in the fifth generation of members of the Sanders family to become a member; Big Daddy (my father’s Dad), Uncle Jesse and my Dad were each President of the Deacon Board.
Mom and her family were members, as well. Sunday morning was a family affair. After church service, we all walked two and a half blocks down the street to my grandparents’ home to bask in the warm glow of a weekly reunion with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and assorted other relatives. These Sundays remain my happiest childhood memories. We looked forward to Sundays as a time of worship, relaxation and a renewal of intimate family ties.
I ventured out to San Francisco in 1970, and it was love at first sight. 45 years later, I am still proud to call Oakland my hometown of choice. I married my husband, Jerry West, in 1975, and we have three adult children. In 1977, I became a member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Berkeley, where our children were nurtured in the love of God and community. Our family worshiped at Epworth UMC for 33 years.
I received my Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from an HBCU (Historically Black College/University), St. Augustine’s Episcopal University, my Masters of Arts (MA) degree in French Literature from San Francisco State University, and my Masters of Divinity (MDiv) degree from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley.
I look forward to my new ministry appointment at First UMC, and being in ministry in Vallejo. There are many new ventures in store, as we move ahead to bring Christ’s love and reconciliation to the community. I am very impressed by what has already been accomplished by First UMC in ministry to the surrounding neighborhood. Our future endeavors are exciting and not to be missed! See you soon!
