Immaculate Conception History

A Church Grows In Salem

William Bentley, a Unitarian minister, was contacted by Father John Thayer, of Boston, to help gather together poor immigrant Catholics to celebrate Mass. That ecumenical spirit led to the development in Salem of the Immaculate Conception Church.

From a private home in Salem in the late 18th century, where European and Canadian immigrants brought together by the Reverends Bentley and Thayer planted the seed of Catholicism in Salem by celebrating the first Mass in Essex County.

To St. Mary's, a simple church on Bridge and Mall Streets, built and funded by 125 devoted Catholics in 1820. St. Mary's is the first Catholic Church dedicated to Mary in New England, In 1826, led by its first pastor, Father John Mahoney of Ireland, it became the first Catholic parish outside of Boston.

From St. Mary's, whose members needed a larger church as the Catholic Church in New England experienced a rapid growth by 1847.

To its present location, where in 1858 St. Mary's was re-dedicated to Mary under her title of the Immaculate Conception.

Immaculate Conception Church, with its beautiful steeple beckoning to those a sea and on land, continues the mission begun by Salem's early Catholics.

The Tree of Life continues to grow.
