Who we are

We are a church of Christ.

We believe that the Holy Bible is the revelation of the Divine mind to mankind, and that it contains the record of God's dealings with man, and teaches us about God's plan to redeem man from the guilt and penalty that is caused by our sins.

We believe that in the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth. We believe that God has revealed Himself in the cosmos and in word through prophets and inspired writers. God cares for those who trust in Him, and He provides for their needs. He found Abraham to be a righteous man, and promised Abraham that he would make a great nation of his descendants, and through him he would bless all mankind.

We believe that Jesus of Nazareth was born of the virgin Mary in Bethlehem and that he lived on the Earth. He taught the crowds that followed him, and He performed wonderful miracles among the people. Jesus was charged falsely by His enemies, and He was crucified, died, and His body was placed in a tomb near Jerusalem. We believe that Jesus was truly resurrected from the grave, that He was seen by his apostles and other disciples, and that He ascended into Heaven. His resurrection is the ultimate proof that He is God the Son. And his resurrection gives hope to Christians.

We believe that the church of Christ, the body of all His disciples, began on the day of Pentecost, and that groups of Christians in communities should join themselves together as a local church of Christ, modeled after the first-century church. Each local church, following the instructions recorded in the New Testament, is an autonomous, self-governing congregation. And each church is fully capable of performing all of the work and responsibilities incumbent upon the church.

We believe that a church of Christians should assemble on each Sunday for a period of worship and fellowship together. We pray together, we sing hymns of praise to God, and share together the Lord's Supper, a communion of the body and blood of Jesus Christ. We study the Scriptures and make applications to our lives. We contribute of our personal funds into a common treasury of the church to provide for evangelism, edification, and benevolent needs of other Christians.

We believe that Christians have the responsibility of teaching others and spreading the gospel of Christ. Those who hear and believe the gospel message are moved to repent of their sins, confess their faith in Jesus Christ as the risen Savior and are baptized in water for the remission of their sins.

We believe that at the end of time, Christ will appear again and will summon all of his faithful disciples to the judgment and final glorification with Him. All Christians aspire to serve our Lord by living righteous lives here on earth, and then to enjoy the glory of Heaven eternally in the presence of God Himself.

And.... we believe that visitors to our assemblies are special guests that we welcome and respect. Guests are never singled out for public attention or embarrassment. Our service to our fellow-man begins with friendship and mutual encouragement.

King Branch Road Church of Christ History

Sevier County, Tennessee, includes the cities of Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg, as well as several thousand acres of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, dozens of tourist attractions and thousands of accommodations.

For years, Christians who visit the area have been aware of the need for additional churches that are close to the park area, and, in particular, churches that hold conservative views on the organization, work, and role of the church.

Roger Williams has been preaching for the Chapman Highway Church of Christ in Knoxville for twelve years. He is familiar with the area, and the need. And for a long time, he has been interested in beginning a new work in the heart of Sevier County. To dedicate his efforts toward that goal, he resigned his position with the Chapman Highway church in the summer of 2005. Within a few days, and based on his past knowledge of Christians in the area, Roger identified several families that expressed an interest in the new work.

A unique opportunity emerged during the summer of 2005 -- a church building became available in the area. The building was originally owned by the Gum Stand Baptist Church, which had moved to a larger location. Acquisition of this building would mean that the church would have a desirable location that was convenient to both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Having a building which would be a permanent location for worship services would give the congregation stability, and could be located easily by visitors, including visitors from other areas.

The listed price of the property was $430,000. Since the church would be small in the beginning, it was obvious that the members there would need assistance in acquiring and paying for the building. A licensed appraiser and a professional building inspector were called in to assess the market value and condition of the property. Olen Britnell, a frequent visitor to the area, volunteered to solicit funds from interested Christians for a down payment, and to work with a local bank to obtain a loan for the balance. Within a week, there were enough commitments for funds that the down payment and some start-up costs could be assured. Further discussions with the realtor lead to an offer of $380,000, which was accepted by the owner.

This early success confirmed that many Christians shared a common perspective on the value of starting a new church in this area.

In addition, others volunteered their services to help with the project. A professional web page designer volunteered to develop a web site for the congregation, and another Christian volunteered to host the site, all of this at no cost to the congregation. Songbooks and communion trays were donated, and many who were unable to contribute financially replied that they would be praying for the effort and would support the congregation with their presence when visiting the area.

Roger Williams is currently in the process of raising the balance of his personal support. He contacted other Christians in the area who want to join his family in this effort, and the congregation began worshipping together regularly, in their building on King Branch Road, on Sunday, September 4, 2005.

The power of Christian prayer Abide with us
O Holy Spirit of God, abide with us; inspire all our thoughts; pervade our imaginations; suggest all our decisions; order all our doings. Be with us in our silence and in our speech, in our haste and in our leisure, in company and in solitude, in the freshness of the morning and in the weariness of the evening; and give us grace at all times humbly to rejoice in Thy mysterious companionship.
