Who we are
Lavington Baptist Church was only a dream of a handful of people in 1980. After two years of prayer and planning, the people at Vernon's Emmanuel Baptist Church decided to start a church here in Lavington. Elmer Fehr was the pastor, he, along with Eric Nickoli, Merv Fishley, and Hans and Carol Neirman, began the church. Not long after, they were joined by the Hoogendorn family, who also had a burden to see a church started in the area. They met in the Lavington Community Hall.
Mark and Brenda Savage were the first official pastoral couple to serve in Lavington. They ministered until December of 1983. Dave Fehr agreed to be interim pastor. He served until August of 1986. It was during his ministry, on October 27, 1985 that the Lavington Fellowship Baptist Church became an officially organised church with 40 charter members. After David Fehr went to school, Dave Kenney and Robert Stauffer filled in until a new pastor was found.
On February 1, 1987 Phil Johnson began his ministry as the Pastor of Lavington Baptist Church. The church continued to meet in the community hall, although, property was purchased on Highway 6. Later it was decided that another parcel of land on School Road was more suitable. This land was purchased in May of 1990.
Pastor Dithmar Molzahn served as Pastor from September 1, 2001 until July 31, 2005. Interim pastors were Pastor Eugene Harder and Pastor Larry Dyck, who served several months each. The pulpit was filled by various pastors near and far during the intervals when no interim pastor was there.
The building of the church was a unique time in our history. It was a giant step of faith for this congregation to go forward. With prayer and faith, this congregation poured the foundations in April 1994. Then, with help from people from all over Western Canada the building was erected in only two weeks. The first Sunday in the new building was on September 4 and the building was dedicated on October 16 with over 320 people in attendance.
From time to time, you will hear the ringing of the bell. This was the Christmas wish of an eight-year-old Lavington boy. The 100 pound brass bell was salvaged from a demolished Vancouver church and was donated by Mr. McQuillan. He read of the boys wish in a Vancouver newspaper and was happy to pass the bell on to a young lad from a small community with a big dream. This church was built on the belief that if God could provide a bell for a boy, he could provide a church for his people.
This church is the realisation of the prayers and dreams of so many. It is our prayer today that we, its members, will be the answers to the hopes and needs of the people in Lavington and the surrounding area.
