Prince of Peace Roman Catholic Church History
On May 24th, 1983 Father William F. Harding received a letter from Cardinal Carter establishing a new parish in the city of Scarborough and appointing him as the parish priest.
The original parish boundaries were expanded in September, 1986. NORTH: Hwy 407 from Brimley Rd. to Markham Rd. WEST: Brimley Rd.(north of Steeles Ave.) and Kennedy Rd (south of Steeles Ave.) EAST: Markham Rd. SOUTH: Finch Ave.
May 24, 1983 Fr. Bill Harding appointed founding pastor of Prince of Peace. Aug. 6-7, 1983 Parish boundaries officially established. * boundaries expanded in September 1986. Aug. 6-7, 1983 Weekend Masses started in Our Lady of Grace school gym. Saturday 4:30 p.m. and Sunday 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Aug. 20, 1983 First baptisms in parish. Oct. 2 , 1983 Inauguration of the devotion to the Infant Jesus of Prague. Oct 22, 1983 Mass times increased. Saturday 4 & 5 p.m. and Sunday 9, 10 & 11 a.m. Nov. 14, 1983 First Confirmation by Bishop Clune. St. Rene Goupil, St. Marguerite Bourgeoys, Our Lady of Grace. Jan 15, 1984 Installation of Fr. Bill Harding as Pastor by Bishop Clune. Apr. 20, 1984 Good Friday walk to Church site. Medal of the Infant Jesus buried. Oct. 21, 1984 First meeting of Prayer Group. Jan. 10, 1985 Meeting with Fr. Ron Kelly, Vice-Chancellor. re: building of the new Church. Feb. 25, 1985 Permission granted to build the Church. Nov. 10, 1985 Walkathon for Sod-turning. Jun 15, 1986 Excavation and laying of the first blocks for the new Church. Sep. 17, 1986 School Board announces new Prince of Peace school. Nov. 30, 1986 LAST week-end at Our Lady of Grace school, after 3 years and 4 months. Dec. 6-7, 1986 First Masses in the New Church.
Some features of the Prince of Peace Church
The building comprises the main Church with a seating capacity of 900, the Hall with a capacity of between 250-300, and a Rectory which accommodates three full-time residents, with offices attached.
On the roof over the front entrance stands a statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague done in gold leaf.
A beautiful stained glass window high over the main altar depicts the Paschal Mystery: "Christ has Died, Christ is Risen, Christ will come again."
The Shrine area features a wall of stained glass depicting the Nativity scene, the Rainbow of the Covenant, the hemispheres of the world and the words: "With God there is no East or West, there is no North or South."
The oil painting of Our Mother of Perpetual Help is an original oil painting done in the Ukraine. It is set in gold leaf.

The gold Cross located on the southern roof was custom made with 24 Kt. gold over 10mm of nickel covering copper.
The most recent addition, our Grotto, located at the the back of the Church.

Lord Jesus, master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas. We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day. We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us. We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom. We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence. We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light. To you we say, "Come Lord Jesus!"
