The parish church of St. John the Baptist was originally a Methodist place of worship, which was built circa 1887. Following much financial input and extensive renovation work, the interior of the church was adapted for Christian Orthodox worship. His Majesty King Peter II Karadjordjevic of Yugoslavia attended the consecration of the church, which was done by His Grace Bishop Dionisije (Milivojevic), on Sunday 5th September 1965. The property has two function halls, a car park and a vicarage. The parish priest is the Very Reverend Protopresbyter-Stavrophore Aleksandar Ilic. The church is located 1.2 miles from Halifax town centre on the A647 Boothtown Road.

The church services are conducted in Church Slavonic, Serbian and English. At every gathering the community socialises in the church hall and which brings together 4 generations.

On Saturday, 19 September 2015, the community celebrated the church's golden jubilee, 50 years since the consecration of the parish church. The 50th patron feast commemoration of the parish intercessor and protector Saint John the Baptist was celebrated on Saturday 16th January 2016. The Divine Liturgy was served by their Eminences Archbishop Gregorios of Thyateira and Great Britain, Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate for Western Europe, Archbishop Elisej of Sourozh, from the Russian Orthodox diocese of Great Britain and Ireland and the host His Grace Bishop Dositej, from the diocese of Great Britain and Scandinavia (Serbian Patriarchate). Concelebrating the Divine Liturgy were clergy of the deanery of Great Britain and Ireland (Serbian Patriarchate) and clergy from other Christian Orthodox dioceses in Great Britain. Other guests present were: Her Royal Highness Princess Katerina Karadjordjevic, the deputy of the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire Mrs.Virginia Lloyd, the Mayor of Calderdale Lisa Lambert, the Consul at the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in London Mrs. Vesna Vercon Ivic and Canon Hilary Barber the vicar of Anglican Saint John the Baptist Minster in Halifax.

The golden jubilee events progressed with dignity and harmony, considering the importance of the anniversary, with the hope that the next 50 years will be to the health and prosperity of the church and of the parish of Saint John the Baptist in Halifax.

Парохијски храм првобитно је био методистичко место богослужења, који је саграђен око 1887. Велико новчано улагање и обимни обновитељски радови су прилагодили унутрашњост храма за хришћанска православна богослужења. Његово Краљевско Величанство Краљ Петар II Карађорђевић од Југославије присуствовао је освећењу храма, који је обавио Његовог Преосвештенства Епископа Дионисија (Миливојевића) у недељу 5 септембра 1965. године. Имање има две сале, паркинг и парохијску кућу. Парохијски свештеник је протопрезвитер-ставрофор Александар Илић. Храм се налази 1.2 миље од центра Halifax на путу А647 Boothtown Road.

Богослужења се обављају на црквено-словенском, српском и енглеском језику. Поводом сваког окупљања заједница се дружи у црквеној сали и окупе се 4 генерације.

У суботу 19. септембра 2015. обележен је златни јубилеја, педесета годишњица од освећења парохијског храма. Педесета храмовна слава, посредника и заштитника Светог Јована Крститеља, прослављена је у суботу 16 јануара 2016. Свету Литургију служили су Високопреосвећена господа Архиепископ тиатеријски и Велике Британије г. Григорије, Егзарх Васељенске Патријаршије за Западну Европу и Архиепископ сорушки г. Јелисеј, из Руске Православне епархија британско-ирске (Московска Патријаршија) са домаћином Преосвећеним Епископом британско-скандинавским г. Доситејом (Српска Патријаршија). На Светој Литургији саслуживало је свештенство архијерејског намесништва британско-ирског (Српска Патријаршија) и свештенство других хришћнских православних епархија у Великој Британији. Други присутни гости су били: Њено Краљевско Височанство Принцеза Катарина Карађорђевић, представник британске краљице Елизабете II за Западни Yorkshire гђа. Virginia Lloyd, градоначелница општине Calderdale Lisa Lambert, конзул при амбасади Републике Србије у Лондону гђа. Весна Верчон Ивић и канон Хилари Барбер викар англиканског Саборног храма Светог Јована Крститеља у Halifax.

Све је протекло достојанствено у складу са величином јубилеја, са надом да наредних 50. година буду на здравље и напредак храма и парохије Св. Јована Крститеља у Halifax.

Parish History

The beginnings of spiritual life of the Serbs in this region of the United Kingdom can be traced back to 1948. In December 1947, the first group of Serbs who decided not to return to communist ruled Yugoslavia, arrived from a camp in Germany and settled in various counties of Northern England, having accepted a 3 year work agreement with the government of the United Kingdom.

They agreed to spend this time working in coal mines, textile factories or farms. Those who chose to work on farms where mainly sent to Scotland, while those who chose to work in textile factories or coal mines came to Yorkshire. Most of them originated from patriachal families and had been brought up in the Christian Orthodox faith and in the Serbian tradition. They carried this faith in their souls and kept it as a great treasure. As soon as they began to settle, the spark of the Christian Orthodox faith began to burn even more brighly and they soon felt the need to organise their spiritual life. They found Christian Orthodox clergy and soon church services began.They did all this very modestly with the limited resources which they had at their disposal, but always with a strong belief in God and a firm hope in a better future, which is charateristic of the Serbian people.

Once the 3 year agreement had expired, they were able to аccept what ever employment they could find. Those who had settled in the larger towns and cities in the North of England, began to ask their relatives, friends and neighbours to live closer to them and they began to find them employment and housing.Thus began the formation of communities in Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield, Mexborough, Doncaster, Sheffield, Rochdale, Oldham and Manchester.

As their financial situation began to improve, the idea of purchasing a church building was first discussed in 1952 and a committee was formed. A person was appointed in various regions to collect donations from families or individuals and a decision was made to purchase the Mount Carmel Methodist chapel in Boothtown, Halifax.

The building was bought in a dilapitated condition in 1953. Extensive repair and renovation work adapted the interior of the building for Christian Orthodox worship. The church was consecrated with the attendance of His Majesty King Peter II and other clerical and civil dignitaries on 26 September 1954. Protosingelos Valerijan Strbac was appointed the first parish priest. From thereon, it was officially the beginning of the Serbian Orthodox church of the Holy Trinity in Halifax, West Yorkshire. The building was sold and today there is a Serbian Orthodox church in Halifax and one in the city of Bradford.

Since those early years, the spiritual life of that Serbian Christian Orthodox congregation developed gracefully, always maintaining a dignified presence in the North of England.

Почетци верског живота Срба у овом делу Велике Британије потиче још из 1948. године. У децембру 1947. године, је дошла прва група Срба који су одлучили да се неврате у Југославију под власт комуниста, стигли су из логора у Немачкој и настанили се у разне општине Северне Енглеске, склопивши трогодишњи уговор са владом Велике Британије.

Договорили су се да ће то време провести на раду у рудницима, текстилним фабрикама или фармама. Они који су изабрали да раде на фармама су углавном послати у Шкотску, док они који су изабрали да раде у текстилним фабрикама или рудницима дошли су у Yorkshire. Већина од њих су потицали из патријархалних фамилија и били васпитани у хришћанској православној вероисповести и у српској традицији. Носили су ову веру у душама и чували је као највеће благо.Чим су се настанили, варница хришћанске православне вере горела je јаче и ускоро су осетили потребу да организују њихов духовни живот. Проналазили су православно хришћанско свештенство и ускоро су почела богослужења. Све су то чинили јако скромно и са средствима са којим су имали на располагању, али увек са јаком вером у Бога и са чврстом надом за бољу будућност које је каратеристично код српског народа.

По истеку трогодишњег уговора могли су да прихвате запослења која су могли да нађу. Они који су се настанили у већим варошима и градовима на Северу Енглеске, почели су да се распитују код својих рођака, пријатеља и комшија да живе ближе и тако су проналазили запослења и кућиште. Тако су почеле да се формирају заједнице у Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield, Mexborough, Doncaster, Sheffield, Rochdale, Oldham, Manchester.

Како се њихово финансијско стање побољшавало, идеја о куповини црквене зграде први пут се расправљала средином 1952. године и формиран је одбор. Појединци су постављени у разним општинама да сакупљају прилоге од фамилија и појединаца и одлука је донета да се купи Mount Carmel методистичка капела у Boothtown, Halifax.

Купљена зграда је била у дотрајалом стању 1953. године. Обимни поправни и обновитељски радови допринели су да се унутрашњост зграде прилагоди за хришћанска православна богослужења. Храм је освећен 26 септембра 1954. године уз присуство Његовог Величанства Краља Петра II. За првог парохијског свештеника постављен је протосинђел Валеријан Штрбац.

Ово је био званичан почетак рада српске православне парохије Свете Тројице у Halifax, West Yorkshire. Зграда је продата и данас постоји црквa у Halifax и једна у граду Bradford.

Од тих првих година духовни живот те српске хришћанске православне општине развио се грациозно увек одржавајући достојанствено присуство на Северу Енглеске.
