Who we are
Saint Joseph is a parish of the Anglican Catholic Church…committed to Biblical Truth and Catholic Order…making Jesus Christ known through Word and Sacrament. We are an active and welcoming parish family that cherishes working and worshiping together in the historic Anglican tradition. Our liturgy is according to the 1928 Book of Common Prayer and Anglican Missal. We enjoy Coffee and Refreshment Hour together following the 900 AM Parish Sunday Mass. Continuous education is a hallmark of the parish. Following Coffee Hour is an always active and thoughtful Discussion Group.
Saint Joseph Parish is housed in the beautiful and historic "Carpenter's Gothic" church building, which was originally built in 1869 on the foundation of the old Mission San Jose, which had been destroyed by an earthquake in 1868. In 1982, the sturdy wooden church was from its original location in what is now known as Fremont California and reconstructed on the present site on North El Camino Real at State Street in San Mateo.
Since its 1978 founding, Saint Joseph Parish has served San Mateo and surrounding communities, caring for the people in the long-standing traditions of Anglo-Catholicism.

Answer: The entire Mass including the readings for the day are printed in the Order of Service booklet. Pick up a copy of the Order of Service on the table to the right as you enter the Nave from the Narthex. Hymns are found in the Hymnal 1940...the larger of the two red books in the pew racks.Question: Will I be noticed...And be welcomed?

Answer: Our children are the future...they need to hear about God’s love too. Children are encouraged to attend Mass with their parents.Question: What happens after the service?
Answer: Following Sunday Mass we enjoy coffee and tasty treats and fellowship together in Young-Wheeler Hall.Question: What christian education do you offer?
Answer: On most Sundays a Discussion Group follows the coffee hour. It is a time for discussion and learning free of partisan politics...whether church or secular. A Study Series is offered on the Wednesdays during Lent.Question: What about baptism?
Answer: The Sacrament of Holy Baptism is available to any adult or child. There is a consultation with the Rector after which the Baptism is scheduled. Non-members may be asked to attend Sunday Mass prior to scheduling a baptism. Every attempt is made to accommodate busy work schedules.Question: What about weddings?
Answer: The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony between a man and woman is available to anyone. The process begins with an initial consultation with the Rector at least 6 months prior to the date of the wedding. Non-members must commit to regular attendance at Sunday Mass and to becoming actively involved in the life of Saint Joseph Parish...with the intent of becoming members of the Parish.Question: What about funerals?
Answer: The death of a loved one is always a difficult time for the family. The funeral liturgy at Saint Joseph Parish is called a Requiem Mass. It is possible to accommodate the needs of non- parishioners who desire Christian Burial for a loved one where a full Requiem Mass may not be suitable. The Parish Church is the appropriate venue for funerals. However, we cannot accommodate “Celebration of Life” services.

Local outreach & community activities
Institutional/Community
Outreach into the Community is more than a Scriptural mandate. It has always played an important part in the life of Saint Joseph Parish and is, in itself, a teaching tool. A parish is a community of believers dedicated to helping others. That help extends beyond the four walls of the building.
The undercroft is utilized during the school year by a pre-school. The Parish offers space as it is available to other organizations provided the intended use is consistent with established Parish guidelines.
Individual parishioner
Outreach into the Community is not limited to corporate activity. Individual parishioners volunteer to assist in local hospitals. Other parishioners are involved with Veterans groups and organizing clothing drives.
Food collection
Saint Joseph Parish supports CALL Primrose’s need for non-perishable food items year arround by collecting food every month based on immediate needs. Food is delivered to CALL each month.
Situational needs
Outreach can take many different forms. The Parish responds to situational needs as they arise.

Rich heritage of Anglican Church Music
Music is an important element of the Historic Liturgy. The rich heritage of Anglican Church Music is experienced every Sunday at Saint Joseph Parish through the classic hymns of the Hymnal 1940. Sung minor propers are taken from the English Gradual. Healey Willan’s beautiful Missa de Sancta Maria Magdalena, composed in 1928 and named after the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Toronto where Dr. WIllan was organist for many years, is sung at Saint Joseph Parish on all of the feast days and most Sundays during the Trinity Season. During the Penitential Seasons of Advent and Lent, John Merbecke’s Mass of 1550, is sung.

Blessing of the Animals in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi 3 October 2021
Animals are an integral part of God's plan and creation...they inhabit the skies, the earth, and the sea. They share in the ways of human beings. They have a part in our lives. Saint Francis of Assisi, for whose life and works celebrate, recognized this when he called the animals, wild and tame, his brothers and sisters.
Remembering Francis' love for those in our care, we gather annually to ask God's blessing on these animals...we thank him for letting us share the earth with all creatures. This very church and the road on which it stands is a direct part of the legacy of St Francis of Assisi...this day has, therefore, additional meaning for Saint Joseph Parish...for this we offer additional thanks.

We need passion in our faith! Instead of praying, 'If I should die before I wake', we should pray, 'Lord wake me up before I die!'
