Shrine of St. John Paul II History

Klasztor i Polska Misja Cystersów pw. Matki Bożej Matki Kościoła w Willow Springs.

Wybrał i sprowadził w 1976 roku ojca Grzegorza Szydłowskiego.

Ojciec opat Hubert przy pomocy i sprycie górali sprowadził też z Polski wierną kopię obrazu Matki Bożej Szczyrzyckiej do kaplicy w Willow Springs. Tradycyjne polskie nabożeństwa sprawowane w kaplicy sprawiły, że wiernych zaczęło przybywać. Dlatego też ojciec opat w 1990 roku sprowadza tutaj ojca Jana Muca, a sześć lat później ojca Michała Blicharskiego.

Budowa nowego kościoła i klasztoru trwała ponad 2 i pół roku. To on wraz z ojcem Michałem przygotował świątynię do konsekracji. We wrześniu tegoż roku do pracy we wspólnocie zakonnej przybył z Polski ojciec Ludwik Żyła.

W październiku 2007 roku kościół cystersów otrzymał status Polskiej Misji pw: Matki Bożej Matki Kościoła, a pierwszym dyrektorem misji został ówczesny przełożony wspólnoty zakonnej ojciec Jan Muc.

Monastery and the Polish Cistercian Mission of St. Our Lady Mother Church in Willow Springs.

Father Michał Blicharski

The history of the Polish Cistercians settled in Willow Springs, Illinois is related to the life and pastoral work of two very distinguished monks who came here from the Cistercian Abbey in Szczyrzyc. The first of them was Abbot Father Dr. Hubert Kostrzański. During World War II, he was a chaplain of the Home Army in Poland.

In 1944, when the power of People's Poland was already strengthening in the liberated territories, he was arrested by the Krakow Security Office and imprisoned in Krakow. He was sentenced to death for his guerrilla activities. He miraculously managed to escape from prison and after many vicissitudes he found himself in Italy, where he served as a chaplain in the Second Polish Corps of General Anders' Army. After transferring troops to England, unable to return to Poland, he had to choose a second homeland. He chose the United States of America, where he arrived in 1946. Here he devoted himself completely to work and pastoral activity and after 10 years, in 1956, he purchased an old farmhouse with a piece of land. It was this house that was the first religious house of the Cistercian community, where the monks lived until December 2003.

When in 1970 Father Hubert was elected abbot - i.e. the superior of the Abbey in Szczyrzyc, he was looking for a suitable successor in America. He chose and brought in in 1976 father Grzegorz Szydłowski. Father Grzegorz turned out to be not only a worthy successor, but also a very good priest. Father Alberyk Lipiński, who came from Poland, helped him temporarily in his pastoral work. It was on the initiative of Father Grzegorz and with the huge help of the local Polish community, and especially the highlanders from Podhale, that the chapel popularly known as the "Church on the hill" was built. With the approval of Cardinal Józef Bernardin, she received permission to celebrate Polish masses and services.

Father Abbot Hubert, with the help and cunning of highlanders, also brought from Poland a faithful copy of the painting of Our Lady of Szczyrzyce to the chapel in Willow Springs. Traditional Polish services held in the chapel caused that the faithful began to arrive. That is why in 1990 Father Abbot brought here Father Jan Muc, and six years later Father Michał Blicharski.

In the Millennium Year 2000, the idea of building a new church and monastery was born among the fathers. Father Abbot Hubert, as the host of this place, together with the fathers and the faithful Polish community, entering the new millennium of Christianity, wanted to leave something behind. The new temple of Our Lady of the Mother of the Church has become a thanksgiving monument for 2000 years of Christianity and at the same time a throne from which, as Bishop Józef Zawitkowski mentioned during its consecration, "Our Lady of Szczyrzyce reigns."

The construction of the new church and monastery took over 2 and a half years. Unfortunately, in January 2002, when the construction work was in progress, Father Abbot Hubert Kostrzański died. It was a huge blow and loss for everyone. Then, a year later, in May 2003, when work on the vault of the temple was in progress, Father Grzegorz Szydłowski also died. It was a sadness and another blow to the local community and the faithful. Father Jan Muc was appointed superior of the Polish Cistercian outpost in Willow Springs. It was he who, together with Father Michał, prepared the temple for consecration. In September of that year, Father Ludwik Żyła came from Poland to work in the religious community.

On December 14, 2003, the solemn consecration of the church and the consecration of the new monastery took place. This was done by Bishop Józef Zawitkowski from Łowicz, with the consent of the ordinary of the local diocese, with the participation of local bishops: Tadeusz Jakubowski and Tomasz Paprocki. The life of two priests: Father Abbot Hubert and Father Grzegorz are permanently inscribed in the walls of the new temple. They gave this church strong foundations - their life and effort, kindness and love for Our Lady of Szczyrzyce and for Poles in exile.

In October 2007, the Cistercian church received the status of the Polish Mission of Our Lady of the Church, and the first director of the mission was the then superior of the religious community, Father Jan Muc. Since December 23, 2012, Father Michał Blicharski has been the new director of the mission. The religious community cares for and tries to preserve faithfully everything that was handed down to it by its great predecessors for the glory of God and His Holy Mother. This place is Polish and it should remain so, and Poles who come here feel a piece of their homeland here.

It has been 10 years since this place has been a community of believers and a mainstay of Polishness. In December this year we solemnly experienced the parish missions of the 10th anniversary of the consecration of this temple.

And we do all this for the greater glory of God and human benefit.

The power of Christian prayer Abide with us
O Holy Spirit of God, abide with us; inspire all our thoughts; pervade our imaginations; suggest all our decisions; order all our doings. Be with us in our silence and in our speech, in our haste and in our leisure, in company and in solitude, in the freshness of the morning and in the weariness of the evening; and give us grace at all times humbly to rejoice in Thy mysterious companionship.
