Who we are
St Cuthbert's Church in Berhampore held its last service on March 12 2015, ending the Anglican church's 95-year-old history on the site.
The building was declared earthquake prone after the August 2013 earthquake.
Services have been relocated to the Chapel of St Thomas in Riddiford St, Newtown, also owned by the Wellington South Parish.
A deconsecration service, including Bible readings and a brief sermon, was held in St Cuthbert's Church hall on Thursday March 12 2015 at 7pm.
The public service included a reading of the bishop's declaration of deconsecration.
The Rev Richard Noble said he was thankful the Wellington South parish had a second church and that St Thomas was able to host an additional service.
"The Lord provides," Noble said.
The foundation stone of St Cuthbert's was laid in 1953.
Before then, the congregation gathered in a wooden building that was moved to the Luxford St site from Adelaide Rd in 1920.
"It's certainly unique.
"They built the concrete St Cuthbert's outside the original wooden one, then when they finished it they took the wooden one down from the inside."
The congregation had adapted well to the new building, despite leaving behind a long history of worship at St Cuthbert's, he said.
"They're sad.
"But they're part of our church family and they've accepted we'll stay together as a family," he said.
"We're just meeting in a different building."

St Cuthbert's Service Times
Our services are at 10.30am every Sunday. The format and words we use come from the New Zealand Anglican Prayer book, which means we follow a structure which is rich in inspiring words, prayers, music and imagery. The feel of our services is relaxed and informal. One of the important things in our gatherings is bringing generations together, fostering fellowship, trust and respect. Our Children and Youth Cultivators, Manu Ward and Tori Holman, offer worship for children and youth in a style and language they can more easily relate to, but we still come together as a family under God for much of the service.
