Who we are

St. Mary, St. James, St. Francis Xavier

We are a Roman Catholic parish community within the Archdiocese of Toronto, with three churches located in Tottenham, Colgan and Achill, Ontario.

Capacity continues to be restricted by the need for physical distancing and we are operating on a first come, first seated basis. Please be patient if the Church is full when you arrive and consider attending the next Mass. Only St. James' Church in Colgan is open for the public celebration of Holy Mass at this time and the normal Mass schedule is shown below.

When you enter into a public indoor space in Simcoe Muskoka, including our church, you should wear a face covering. A face covering means a medical or non-medical mask that covers the nose, mouth and chin. The Church will be sanitized after every use.

The Archbishop continues to offer dispensation from our Sunday & Holy Day obligation. A live stream is available from St. Michael's Cathedral Basilica on Youtube by clicking here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChY8MWUNQLcqElLmb9kFtRA

Please see Upcoming Events below to join members of our parish community in prayer via Zoom.

Unfortunately, at this time due to the pandemic restrictions, we are unable to procced with preparation for candidates for first communion and confirmation. We hope to resume as soon as possible and an update will be provided as the situation changes.

Other information

Additional Info:
March 17th, 2020

Coronavirus COVID-19:

Given the present situation and in light of the declaration of a state of emergency by the Ontario Government, the following measures are now in place:

Holy Mass: All celebrations of Holy Mass are cancelled, both on Sunday and weekdays. Archbishop Thomas Cardinal Collins grants the faithful dispensation from their Sunday obligation.

Perpetual Adoration: continues normally for individual prayer.

Sacrament of Reconciliation: Anyone who wishes to receive the sacrament should contact the pastor. The sacrament will not be celebrated in the confessional but rather in another location, where confidentiality may be ensured and where the distance required by the health officials can be maintained.

First Holy Communion, First Reconciliation and Confirmation: postponed for the duration of the emergency.

Meetings and events: all are cancelled at this time including CWL & KofC.

More information: Here is a link to Cardinal Collins's full message including where to watch Mass online or on TV, arrangements for other sacraments and celebrations, and the comforting note that all priests of the archdiocese will celebrate Mass every day privately for the intentions of the people. Please click here to read.

SCAM ALERT: Unfortunately there are some unscrupulous people who are taking advantage of the current situation and the Archdiocese is aware that some parishioners are receiving requests, purportedly from the pastor, for gift cards. Please exercise caution and check with the parish office if you wish to verify any call, text or email.   Edit

St. Francis Xavier History

During the 1880's, the population of Tottenham greatly increased to handle the additional business generated by the new railroad. To meet the pastoral needs of the growing village, Father Francis McSpirrit, Pastor of St. James Colgan, decided that another church should be built in the parish. In the summer of 1885 land was purchased and construction started.

His Grace, the Most Rev. John Joseph Lynch C.M.D.D. , Archbishop of Toronto, laid the cornerstone and dedicated the church on September 3, 1885. Vicar-General Msgr. Francis Patrick Rooney blessed the completed brick church on February 18, 1886. The church was supplied with electricity for lighting as early as 1910. Early in the 1920's a collection was taken up and a bell was purchased for the church. The sacristy was added onto the west end of the church in 1965.

Renovations of the church interior commenced in May 2019.

St. Francis Xavier Church typifies the standard small Roman Catholic church of the late 19th century rural Irish Ontario.

The power of Christian prayer Grant me...
Grant me prudently to avoid him that flatters me, and to endure patiently him that contradicts me
