St Francis of the Birds History
St. Francis of the Birds Anglican Church was built in 1951. It was constructed from some 600 local pine logs by a crew of artisans headed by Victor Nymark following the Scandinavian tradition.
The pulpit and lectern are solid oak. The figurehead which adorns the lectern came from the ship "Ooya"; a 130 ton vessel built on the Mersey in England, and which sailed to Montreal in 1870.
The windows in the church represent the 4 seasons, also night and day. The main window shows St. Francis with 21 species of birds native to the Laurentians. The other window represents the Holy Spirit descending upon Earth restoring order to the chaos of Creation.
Memorial Gardens & Green Space The garden between the Church and Hall has a poignant history. It was donated by the Nymark family in memory of Lydia Nymark, wife of the late Victor Nymark from whom the concept of the log structure of St. Francis came about.
