St. George's Anglican Church History
Towards the end of the 1800's, the Anglican Church was becoming well established in Fort Saskatchewan, and the parish of St. George was constituted formally. The English church, as it was known commonly in those days, has connections with Fort Saskatchewan that back to Canon William Newton, who arrived in Edmonton on September 28, 1875, after a five month journey from Ontario.
The year after Newton arrived in Edmonton, he began to look for a permanent location. Finally, he settled on a piece of land some seven miles downstream, and he built there a home and a chapel, the site becoming known as "The Hermitage". "The Hermitage became the centre of William Newton's activities for 20 years as he went out on missionary journeys of up to 200 miles.
Fort Saskatchewan was well within Canon Newton's territory and he held many services for the men at the barracks, many of whom were Anglican. His work elsewhere began to claim more and more of Canon Newton's time, and, eventually, the regular services at Fort Sasktachewan were discounted. However, occasional services and mid-week meetings were maintained until regular services could be provided from elsewhere.
Regular Anglican services in Fort Saskatchewan were resumed when Rev. Geoffrey C. d'Easum began to serve it from a neighbouring parish a short while before he moved to the Fort in early 1895. Almost immediately after his arrival, the deed of erection constituting the parish was issued. It did not prove possible to build a church that year, but plans were in place to build the following here. Finally in October 1896 construction and work began on the building located a little to the south of the 1951 church. Much volunteer work was used, several Anglicans came from as far away as Partridge Hill to help with the construction. By November 1896 the frame was up and the building was rapidly assuming a finished appearance.
On January 3, 1897 The Right Rev. Cyprian Pinkham, Bishop of Calgary presided at the dedication service of St. George's church.
In the early days, Anglican services were conducted at a number of different places in the country, such as Agricola and Partridge Hill. However, Anglican work never became established strongly in the rural areas. The number of services in the surrounding areas declined and as transportation improved, all Anglicans in the district looked to St. George's Fort Saskatchewan, as their parish church.

submit yourself to Him
The will of God for your life is simply that you submit yourself to Him each day and say, "Father, Your will for today is mine. Your pleasure for today is mine. Your work for today is mine. I trust You to be God. You lead me today and I will follow."
