St. Jude Parish History

●St. Jude Catholic Church of Gun Barrel City, Texas, began as a Mission of the Diocese of Dallas under St. Edward Catholic Church in Athens, Texas. The first Holy Mass was celebrated by Fr. Bronislaus Mysliwiec (known as Fr. Ben) on 3 August 1975, in Brawner Hall in Gun Barrel City. In 1977, Fr. B.G. Eades was appointed Administrator of St Jude Mission. Deacon Howard Palms was appointed to function as the permanent deacon in St. Edward's as well as at St. Jude's parish in May, 1978.

●St. Jude Church was built and on 28 October 1980, was dedicated by Most Rev. Thomas Tschoepe, then Bishop of Dallas. As the growth of St. Jude parish continued, the need for a parish Church became apparent. The new building, including a meeting hall, kitchen, small apartment, a small meeting room and facilities was completed in 1983.

●Fr. Eades resigned as Administrator of the parish and returned to Dallas. Msgr. Samuel Metzger, Pastor of St. Edward was appointed as Administrator of St. Jude Mission.

●On 16 December 1986, the new Diocese of Tyler was created and Most Rev. Charles E. Herzig was named the first bishop of the new diocese. Bishop Herzig passed on 7 September 1991 after a long battle with cancer.

●Fr. Andrew Melel, O.I.C., arrived in Texas and was appointed Administrator of St. Jude Mission in May 1987. The rectory was built and dedicated by Bp. Herzig on 9 April 1989.

●On 2 May 1992, Most Rev. Edmond Carmody was installed as the second bishop of the Diocese of Tyler. In July 1995, Fr. Joseph Kallookalam was assigned to St. Jude.

●Deacon Richard Sykora, currently assigned to the Diocese of Dallas, became the second Permanent Deacon at St. Jude. Bishop Carmody officiated at the formal ground-breaking ceremony for the new St. Jude Church on 23 February 1999.

●In 1999, Fr. Carlos Rangel was assigned to St. Jude to celebrate Sunday Holy Mass in Spanish. After he was reassigned, Fr. Cristobal Hernandez was assigned to celebrate the Spanish Mass at St. Jude in November, 1999.

●In October 1999, Seminarian Francis O'Dowd was assigned to St. Jude as his home parish.

●On 5 March 2000, Bishop Carmody officially dedicated the new St. Jude Catholic church to a parish status.

●In December 1995, Bishop Alvaro Corrada del Rio was installed as the third Bishop of Tyler.

●Fr. Bernard Boteju assigned as pastor to St. Jude from July 2010 - July 2011.

●On 25 July 2011, Bishop Corrada appointed Fr. Dan Daugherty as the new pastor at St. Jude parish to which he is currently serving the parish community.

●On September 09, 1994, Juan Cazares joined St. Jude and immediately began directing the choir. In 2002 he started his Deacon formation education and was ordained as a permanent Deacon on December 8, 2007 and still serves at St. Jude.

●On August 1, 2017, Fr. Dan Daugherty Retired. On this same day Deacon Richard Sykora retired as well.

●On September 1, 2017, our new pastor will begin his next chapter at our parrish. Fr. Kelly started and left after one year.

●Fr. Kelly was replaced by Pater John-Mary Bowlin

●On October 1, 2018, Fr. John-Mary Bowlin assumed the role of pastor.

There is much more history about the parish, the above is just a short summary of the life behind our beautiful and faith-filled parish.
