Who we are

The Parish is comprised of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Maple Lake, St. James Anglican Church, Kinmount, and St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Minden. The three churches are one body in Christ, working and worshipping together. The parish is alive with God’s love and works.

We are a “missional” church, which means we are part of the communities of all three churches. We believe that to be the hands, the feet, and the voices of Christ, the church must be part of the community, and the lives of the people who live there. As such we offer many programs to the community, with more to come. St. James said, “Faith without work is dead,” and as such we put the parishes’ faith into action in many ways, from worship to operating a Thrift Shop.

The Anglican Parish of Minden, Kinmount, and Maple Lake History

St. Paul’s, Minden

In 1865, in response to a proposal of the Canada Land and Emigration company, The Church of England in Canada established the Minden Mission. The company agreed to assist in the support of a missionary and that same year the Reverend Frederick Burt was appointed. A native of England, Burt had already served as a missionary in Quebec. Burt first conducted services in a schoolhouse, and about 1868, construction was begun on a simple frame church in the Gothic style.

In 2016 St. Paul’s celebrates 150 years of continuous ministry in Minden! With our sister congregations, we celebrate over 400 years of collective proclamation of the Gospel in Minden and area.

St. James, Kinmount

The history of St. James, began with The Reverend Edward Soward, who travelled on foot through this lumbering territory, holding services in schoolhouses, lumber camps and homes. In 1883, this attractive timber-frame building was built of local timber, lumbered by local men who gave generously of their time and money to establish their church. The women of the community furnished the interior, provided the communion vessels and made liturgical hangings. On August 31, 1884, Archbishop Sweatman consecrated the new church. A rectory was purchased for $800 in 1906. Both the church and the rectory escaped the severe flooding of Kinmount in April 1928. However, during the disastrous fire of April 1942, much of the town, including the rectory was destroyed. Many valuable church records were also destroyed

St. Peter’s, Maple Lake

At St. Peter’s we worship in a century-old stone church by the lake, which was designed by architect Henry Billings. The cemetery behind the church reminds us of the faith of our ancestors. The glorious fragrance of cedars and rugged pine contribute to the atmosphere which is ideal for weddings and special events like the Highland Tea. Another annual favourite is the traditional Turkey Supper with all the fixings.

The power of Christian prayer Empower me
Empower me to be a bold participant, rather than a timid saint in waiting; to exercise authority of honesty, rather than to defer to power or deceive to get it; to influence someone for justice, rather than impress anyone for gain; and by grace, to find treasures of joy, of friendship, of peace hidden in the fields you give me daily to plow.
