Who we are
What to expect on a Sunday morning at Vox!
I know that a lot of people are nervous about going to a church for the first time. It can be tough because you have no idea what to expect. You might be a little worried that things will be weird and you’ll feel uncomfortable. We get that, so we thought that maybe we’d explain what goes on Sunday mornings to you, so you’ll be a little better prepared.
10:30 … ish …
Our service starts at 10:30 am, but many of us struggle to be exactly ‘on time’. Some show up sometime after 10 am to grab a cup of coffee or a treat and connect before we start. This is a great chance to meet a few people, or at least to get a caffeine fix! Transitions can be hard for some of us, so we usually have a countdown timer with 5 minutes notice. This is especially helpful if you’ve got to make a last minute run to the bathroom.
Getting Started
We usually start the service off with a few songs that are a little more upbeat and fun for the kids to get involved in.
After the first couple of songs, we pause for some announcements. Then we take time to sing Happy Birthday to anyone who celebrated their birthday in the last week. After that we dismiss the kids to our children’s program and break for ten minutes or so. This gives us time to grab another cup of coffee, tea or a nibble. It also gives time to connect a little bit with each other. In case you haven’t noticed, food and community are a pretty big deal to us as a faith community.
Kids!
If you have kids, you’ll want to know that we have several things going on Sunday mornings. First, your little ones are welcome to stay with you if they are more comfortable. We never want folks to feel that they have to separate if that’s uncomfortable.
For those who are interested, we have three different options each week:
Our nursery is for kids who haven’t started school yet. There are toys and games, snacks and stories for our littlest ones who are ready to move and make noise. The nursery is staffed by an adult and one to two youth, based on numbers. Our JK – Grade 5 kids are our ‘VoxKids’. They have their own program. They use art, movement, songs and stories to explore what it means to follow Jesus in their everyday lives. Our Jr. High program runs on a four-week cycle – one Sunday a month the students stay in the service. The next week they break out into their own class during the sermon. The third week they prepare food for folks in our community who are struggling with sickness, injury or other hard situations. The fourth week they have a chance to interview an adult in our community about what it means for them to follow Jesus. If you’re visiting for the first time with a Jr. High student, make sure to ask someone which week we’re on, so that your student has the chance to join in – we’d love to have them! (Please note, the Jr. High’s will stay in the main service until the sermon starts, and will then leave together.)
If you have a child or youth with a disability, please refer to our Accessibility Commitment page for more information on how we can support you and your child. If your child or youth identifies as LGBTQ, please refer to our LGBTQ Commitment page for more info on that.
Teaching
After the coffee break we usually spend a little bit more time singing a few songs and sometimes we watch a short video that’s designed to help get our brains chewing on the topic we’re going to be talking about that morning. When it comes time for the sermon, we are fortunate enough to have our Lead Pastor – Nathan Barnes – two Associate Pastors – Christina MacBean and Roy Snow – as well as a number of other folks in our community to choose from.

Leader Bio:
Nathan has been in ministry leadership for almost two decades now and has a passion for missional community, as well as the creative teaching of the word of God. Nathan is married to his beautiful wife Carrie, and has two sons: Keilan and Caleb. Nathan brings a passion for worship, for new expressions of the church, and a desire to see God’s Kingdom expand in the city of Barrie.
In the winter, Nathan can be found in the terrain park at one of our local ski hills, and in the summer you can catch him at one of Southern Ontario’s skateparks riding his BMX and teaching his sons how it’s done. He is an enthusiastic reader, who also enjoys watching off-beat comedies, and playing on-line video games.
Carrie enjoys gardening, playing hockey, and taking care of her three boys. She is also a Registered Practical Nurse, and works at the local hospital in Barrie.
Keilan and Caleb are the crazy boys, and although Nathan often gets blamed for their energy, the truth is they are more like their mother than their father. Keilan is in grade eleven and loves reading, creating his own comic strips and video games. Caleb is in grade eight and is less interested in sitting around and loves anything that keeps him moving, especially skiing, skateboarding and freerunning. The boys are a lot of fun, and like all boys their age, have a talent for chaos and disaster.

You are...
You are the shade in the heat, You are shelter in the cold, You are eyes to the blind, You are a staff to the pilgrim, You are an island in the sea, You are a stronghold upon land, You are healing to the sick. You are the luck of every joy, You are the light of the sun's beam, You are the door of lordly welcome, You are the pole star of guidance, You are the step of the roe of the height, You are the step of the white-faced mare, You are the grace of the swimming swan, You are the jewel in each mystery.
