Who we are
We are a multi-cultured church, with a mix of all ages and have a large amount of children. The congregation is made up of around 160 members, 60 regular attendees and 100 children and young people.
Woodford Baptist Church was established in 1881 shortly after the railway came to Woodford. A school-chapel was opened in 1883 and three years later a minister was settled here. In 1895-6 the present main buildings were built in front of the school-chapel. Since that time many thousands of local residents have been part of the life of the church. Church members haven been local shopkeepers, teachers, professionals, councillors and even a Mayor of Redbridge. In the 1940‘s two ‘missions’ were opened locally which subsequently became independent churches. The church partnered with Redbridge in the 1960’s and 1970’s to build a residential care home and two sheltered housing units for over 100 people all based on one site in Wanstead.
The church is growing numerically and in the services that we offer to the local community. Regular courses or seminars open to the public are about parenting (including single parenting); marriage; singleness; separation/divorce; money management and the well-known Alpha course.
Clubs and activities are well attended by children and young people of all ages with 100 children/young people involved week by week and up to 100 children at holiday clubs.
Fundraising Pamper Events (women only!) for Breast Cancer or the Macmillan Nurses have filled the buildings regularly. We take part in the Woodford Festival and have links with local churches and local, national and international Christian organisations, for example the Redbridge based Christian Education Project, Epping Forest Youth for Christ, Christians Against Poverty, Tearfund and World Vision.
The church recognises, and is interested in meeting or helping to provide solutions to a local demand for debt counselling, addiction recovery, excluded young people and homelessness.

Woodford Baptist Church History
Open our ears.
Blessed Lord, open our ears to hear what Thou speakest and our eyes to see as Thou seest. Give us hearts to beat in sympathy with Thine at the sight of every little child; and above all, our Lord, to understand and experience how surely and how blessedly Thou fulfilest Thy promise, "Whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me."
