Who we are

United Church of Angel Fire (UCAF) embodies an exciting ecumenical vision. UCAF is a multi- denominational congregation of 190 members. About half of the members are full-time residents and half are associate members who reside in the Moreno Valley part of the year. In general, most associate members participate during the summer months. Worship service attendance averages 55-75 with summer worship attendance of 125 -150. Attendance for Christian Education averages 15-20.

The United Church of Angel Fire is a congregation that sets high priority on the fulfillment of Jesus' prayer: "That they all may be one; even as Thou, Father, are in me, and I in Thee, that they may also be in us; that the world may believe that Thou didst send me." John 17:21

HISTORY: Beginning as the Angel Fire Presbyterian Fellowship, in late 1992 the group began to explore a way to become an ecumenical congregation with people of several denominations united in a single mission yet retaining their ties with their own tradition, if they so chose. This has been accomplished. We are supported by and affiliated with four denominations; The Presbyterian Church (USA), The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), The United Methodist Church and The United Church of Christ. The membership of the congregation is composed of people from thirteen denominations, and we are striving to be inclusive of all God's children.

In 1994 the congregation called its first full-time pastor; the Rev. Tracey Miller. Rev. Miller is from the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) tradition and served until 2002. The church second full time pastor, Rev. Murray Thompson, from the Presbyterian Church (USA), served from early 2003 through April 2009. As of October 2009, and as part of the pastor search process, UCAF has installed an interim pastor, Rev. Doug McPherson from the United Methodist denomination. Rev. Richard Safford accepted the Call and began serving as pastor November 1, 2010.

United Church of Angel Fire History

Who We Are

The United Church of Angel Fire, chartered in 1996, is a multi-denominational congregation affiliated with and supported by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the United Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church, USA, and the United Church of Christ. There are nine denominational preferences listed among our membership of 168, and we have 58 non-member friends of the church who attend frequently. The church is committed to being “Divine Love in Action.” We are in a resort village of 1100 full-time residents which swells to 4,400 or more during the summer and on ski weekends. The Village has 2,400 plus residential units about half of which are occupied full-time and the balance occupied primarily on holiday weekends and in the summer. Skiing, golf, tennis, hiking, pickle ball and fishing are among the main pursuits of our residents. And the club house at the Resort has a very modern workout facility and swimming pool. The attendance at worship varies widely during the year with the peak attendances from Memorial Day to Labor Day and at Christmas. Our average attendance last year was 79 and that has been true for the past five years. The attendance during the peak season of summer swells to 140 or more and declines in the off season to the 50’s.

The membership is generally older, very successful and well educated, and very active, though many are retirees. We have a few younger families with children, but they are the minority. The church has no debt and has just completed a new porte cochere at the West entrance.

Where We Are

Located 91 miles northeast of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and 24 miles east of Taos, Angel Fire is in an alpine valley at 8,500 ft. elevation. The ski resort was opened in the late 1960’s and the golf course a decade thereafter. The full-time population is 1100 approximately with another 400 residents in the extended valley. The primary employer in the valley is the Angel Fire Resort, which has approximately 500 workers in ski season, and the secondary employer is the village of Angel Fire with some 65 employees. The cost of an average home in Angel Fire is $400,000.00 and somewhat less outside the Resort. Eagle Nest has a prek-8th grade school, Angel Fire has a charter high school, and there is a public high school in Cimarron, some 36 miles away. The village which grew up around the Resort developed basic services for the residents including a grocery store, filling stations, real estate offices, postal service, a medical clinic, a community recreation center and fire and police protection and a variety of shops and restaurants. The valley has nine churches including Lutheran, Southern Baptist, Calvary Chapel, the Moreno Valley community church, the church of Christ, the Roman Catholic, and UCAF. Many of the full-time residents are retirees from Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. There are several restaurants, real estate offices and building contractors, as well as customary support services. Many of those who work in Angel Fire commute from smaller communities in the valley or south of it in Guadalupita and Mora. Recently Angel Fire has had fiber optic cable installed so that high speed internet access is available to those who telecommute.

Who Is God Calling Us to Be

From its beginning the congregation which began as a Presbyterian fellowship, has had the goal of “Being Divine Love in Action.” And what that means to us that we want to maintain a center of Christian worship which empowers its members to go out into the community and serve in whatever ways are needed. We have in our DNA a mission sense and a desire to serve. We share in multiple local ministries which include ALM (Always Loving Mankind) food pantry which delivers food package to 75 households in the surrounding area, the Firewood Angels, who provide free firewood to any in need, The Food for Kids program which helps feed children on the weekends when school lunches are not available, the Taos Men’s Shelter, and newly developed Heart House, a safe house for women and children in Taos, and the DreamTree Adolescent Shelter. In our wider mission we support each of the four denominations that sponsored us, giving annually to their mission programs, and we participate in One Great Hour of Sharing, and many crises and disasters.

Our church council has recently completed an updated “Strategies for Ministry” which was generated by each of the ministry chair persons to be adopted by the Council. These include both short and long term goals as to how we plan to be Divine Love in Action.

The Pastor For Whom We Are Looking

We are seeking the person God calls to lead us into the future. Our first pastor held a doctorate degree, as did the second pastor, and our current pastor who is retiring has an M. Div. plus 30 hours. We are seeking an experienced pastor of some ten years or more. And it is essential, we believe, there be a theological, cultural, and social fit. Our pastors have been very active in the community and have taken the lead in many activities, and we would like that tradition to continue. It is written in our by-laws that the candidate must come from one of the four supporting denominations, and must be approved by all of them. But in all this process, the overwhelming concern and our constant prayer is that God will lead us to the person God chooses to be our pastor.

A recently completed congregational survey, to which 75 responded, revealed the following demographic information: most of those responding (75%) have lived in Angel Fire nine years or more, a few (25%) have lived here less than that. Of those responding 53% are here part-time and 47% are full-time. The great majority of the responders are over 60 (90%), and ten percent are 50 or under.

The majority of the results of our survey show that our church wants a pastor who is thought-provoking and challenging while also comforting and reassuring with a strong spiritual emphasis. We are looking for a pastor with a relaxed interpersonal style who encourages and defers to the congregation. The pastor’s sermon style should be thought-provoking and challenging, comforting and reassuring, while Biblically based and illustrated. Sermons should be carefully composed, engaging, inspirational, and skillfully delivered. It is essential that our pastor be aware of and integrate into this resort community. In this regard, the pastor’s role should include involvement in our resort community through civic roles and leadership and participation in local ministries and activities.

Our congregational responses indicate we are looking for a pastor who is a Minister of the Word, Celebrant, and Worship leader as well as being an able administrator-leader. Responses also indicate support for the minister’s role as witness-evangelist, counselor-healer and spiritual guide with strong ecumenical emphasis. The vast majority favor a pastor who is a warm, loving, compassionate person who is a good listener.
