Who we are
Calvary Chapel Cary is a non-denominational church that believes in the inerrancy of the Bible and systematic, verse-by-verse teaching from Genesis to Revelation. A uniquely diverse community of Believers, CC Cary is deeply rooted in Scripture and truly reflects the family of God.
“Through the power of the Holy Spirit and teaching of God’s Word, we strive to equip the body to “be transformed by the renewing of [the] mind, that [they] may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” -Romans 12:2
Because of the church’s size and influence, many have asked exactly what Calvary Chapel Cary believes, and what is the vision and mission of the church. We are always hesitant to try to answer those questions, not because we are unsure of our beliefs, but because we are cautious to avoid division within the Body of Christ. Calvary Chapel pastors are not clones who all believe exactly the same thing. Still, there’s an overarching and unique distinction in the mission that we all share. The following is brief, although we hope it answers some of your questions.
Vision:
Our vision is to know the Lord Jesus Christ and to make Him known in our church, in our city, and in our world.
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

Mission Statement:
Calvary Chapel Cary fulfills the vision through worshiping God, building the people to do the work of the ministry, reaching our city and surrounding area by impacting them with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
We believe it is God’s intention for this church to shape each believer into the image of His Son Jesus Christ and equip them for the work of the ministry.
Therefore, we place great emphasis on:
The verse-by-verse teaching of God’s Word
Prayer and worship
The development of sincere relationships, through various smaller group Bible studies, which allow for deeper interaction
Raising up a new generation of worshipers, leaders, and ministers through our youth ministries and our Children’s Church
We believe Christ’s commission to preach the gospel is a global commission and local commission. Therefore, we prayerfully take every opportunity to preach the gospel on a global level as God opens doors
Supporting missionaries, mission organizations and mission events that coincide with our vision and statement of faith.

I was born and raised in Philadelphia as the son of a single parent. My mother was a hard-working woman who managed to send my brother and me to Catholic school. However, at the age of nine, I began a life that revolved around the use of drugs. Through elementary and high school, I used drugs every day, even to the point of going to school under the influence. Although I attended a Catholic school until age 16, I never saw the need for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I was expelled from a Catholic high school and attended public school for my last two years. By the grace of God, I graduated on time.
In 1979, I joined the U.S. Navy and became a hospital corpsman, but for the first three years, I continued to use drugs. I was ordered to attend drug rehab, which I successfully completed under false pretenses. On January 23, 1982, I was invited to a church revival by a street preacher, who I came across on a Saturday morning. To ensure that I attended the revival, the preacher suggested that he follow me throughout the day until the revival that evening.
I tried to help him understand that it was not a good idea. Unknown to him, I wasn’t planning to go to the revival; I wanted to party and get high with my friends who were just like me. So I tried to get rid of him, but was unsuccessful.
That night during the revival, I was sitting in the pew and I heard the preacher say, “If there is one who would desire to give their life to Jesus Christ, get out of your seat and come down the aisle.” The Holy Spirit lifted me out of my seat, and I went down that aisle and gave my heart to Jesus Christ.
I was changed, new, born again and finally free. Free from sin, free from drugs, free from the bondage and chains that were holding me. My life was different. I saw the world through different eyes. And the same day I gave my life to Jesus, I met a lovely woman who would become my wife.
After accepting Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I was shipped off to Okinawa, Japan, and stationed with the Marine Corps. In 1990, I received orders to serve in Operation Desert Storm and went to El Jubal, Saudi Arabia. Upon arrival, we were placed in an airplane hangar with 2,000 other Navy and Marine service members. I remember placing my seabag alongside my cot, grabbing my Bible and standing on a trashcan yelling out, “In 30 minutes I’ll be teaching a Bible study at the light post, anybody want join me?” I was surprised: 40 men and women joined me in my first Bible Study in Saudi Arabia. I continued to teach God’s Word every day for the duration of my duty there.
Through a special program in 1992, I left active duty after 13 years of service. My wife, Elvira, and I began serving in Calvary Chapels in Southern California. In 1995 we were called to move to North Carolina, where we began a Bible study with 17 people…which would grow quickly to become Calvary Chapel Cary. Here it is, 20+ years later…and the Lord continues to be faithful!
One of my favorite quotes is “I’m just a nobody, trying to tell everybody, about Somebody, who can change anybody.” I’m a witness and a living testimony. What He’s done for me, He can do for you.

Our Beginnings
In March of 1995, while serving at Calvary Chapel Temecula in California, Pastor Rodney Finch, and his wife, Elvira, were led by the Lord to plant a church in North Carolina. In obedience, they visited Raleigh several times, meeting with others about starting a Calvary Chapel and moving their family east.
Just one month after settling their family into the Treybrooke apartment complex, the apartment manager asked Pastor Rodney to begin leading a Bible Study in the community center. Outgrowing the apartment setting after just two months, the Bible Study moved in September 1995 to a rented trailer and garage in Morrisville. At this time, the gathering became known as Calvary Chapel Raleigh.
By December 1996, this fellowship of Believers once again outgrew their worship space and moved to a vacancy adjacent to a gas station in Cary, and the name was officially changed to Calvary Chapel Cary. It was less than three years later, in March of 1999, that the church moved to its current location on Center Street in Apex, and has been growing ever since.
Three Calvary Chapels have been planted from our church: Calvary Chapel Chapel Hill, Calvary Chapel Clayton and Calvary Chapel Wilmington.
