Center United Methodist Church History
Center United Methodist Church started as Center Union in 1818 and is thought to have merged the congregations of Worthy’s Chapel to the southwest and Mt. Pleasant to the northeast. The first permanent structure, a log building, was erected at the site of earlier camp meetings and brush arbor services.
The log church was later replaced with one of framed construction. By 1880, ministers noted an improvement in the “spiritual condition” of churches in the area. For many years, a “Big Meeting” was held at Center for two weeks in late July or early August. Preaching was often held in the morning and again in the afternoon with dinner on the grounds between services.
By 1885, Center had grown so much that a larger church was erected. In 1912, the church was remodeled to increase seating, and a steeple was added. Two World Wars and the Great Depression delayed further expansion until the late 1940s. Under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. John Cline and through much hard work and financial sacrifice of its members, our present church (the fourth church structure) was completed in 1950.
Plenty has changed since people first walked to Center or traveled by mule and wagon, but Center’s commitment to the Lord has remained constant. We invite you to honor our rich past and become an important part in Center’s future!
