Who we are

Providence AME Church Mission

We exist to glorify God and to establish a loving community of people who follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. Through worship, prayer, bible study and friendship we seek to grow in understanding of God’s ways; to experience his love and to respond by serving the community in which we live.

AME Mission

The Mission of the African Methodist Episcopal Church is to minister to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and environmental needs of all people by spreading Christ's liberating gospel through word and deed. At every level of the Connection and in every local church, the African Methodist Episcopal Church shall engage in carrying out the spirit of the original Free African Society, out of which the A.M.E. Church evolved: that is, to seek out and save the lost, and serve the needy through a continuing program of

(1) preaching the gospel,
(2) feeding the hungry,
(3) clothing the naked,
(4) housing the homeless,
(5) cheering the fallen,
(6) providing jobs for the jobless,
(7) administering to the needs of those in prisons, hospitals, nursing homes, asylums and mental institutions, senior citizens' homes; caring for the sick, the shut-in, the mentally and socially disturbed, and
(8) encouraging thrift and economic advancement.

Providence AME History

Providence AME Church was organized by a group of Christian Pioneers: The Bowers, Caughman, Counts, Eleazer, Hart, Hipp, Mayers and Price families in the year of 1865. Services were held under a "Brush Harbor" in the Providence Community of Little Mountain, South Carolina.

Several years later, a simple wood frame church erected on property donated by Dennis Sulton, under the leadership of Rev. Issac Cook. Worship services have continued at this location since that time. In the late 1950's, the members had a vision and with great determination stepped out on faith and reconstructed Providence AME into this beautiful brick structure in which we sit today. In the year of 1972, the officers and members again stepped out on faith and added the kitchen and education building.

Over the past 143 years existence, Providence AME Church has grown in membership, standing on strong religious principles and Christian faith. Over thirty ministers have reigned as pastor of this church.
