Who we are
St. John is an Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) congregation in rural Princeton, Illinois.
In 1849 Carl Hassler, a local farmer, donated two acres of sandy hilltop to be used as a site for the newly founded St. John Lutheran Church. Originally, a single, small building served as sanctuary, parsonage, and school for the congregation. By 1854, a larger church had been built, and an adjacent piece of land to the north of the hilltop was designated a cemetery. 1924 saw the construction of today’s worship space, and in 1967, a parish education building was added on. A church elevator servicing all three levels of the building was installed in 2001. Today, St. John is an active and thriving congregation that seeks to follow Christ’s commandments by serving others and worshipping God.
The people of St. John gather every Sunday for worship and fellowship. During the school year, Sunday School is offered for those of all ages, and educational Intergenerational Events take place during the summer months. Holiday worship services are also held. Weddings and baptisms are frequent occasions, and Confirmation class is held by Pastor Kim Lee-Brown during the school year, with the rite of Confirmation occurring on the day of Pentecost. First Communion classes are held every year in the spring.
