Who we are
St. John’s Church, Lafayette Square is a downtown Episcopal parish located at the corner of Sixteenth and H Streets, NW, across from the White House. St. John’s welcomes all to come and worship—whether prospective or regular members, persons seeking a moment of solitude during the day, or visitors to the city looking for a Sunday service.
Groups of different ages meet for social gatherings and discussion of relevant issues. The Parish as a whole comes together for weekly luncheons on Sundays, and many other events throughout the year. Members of the Parish also join in outreach activities—tutoring, food programs, and housing.
At St. John’s Church, we believe Christ is calling us to be a renewed church in a changing world. Empowered by the Spirit of God, we respond to Jesus’ call as we deepen our bond with Christ through worship, become a community where all are accepted, and work together as laity and clergy to do God’s work in the world.
Wherever you are in your life with God — whether a hesitant searcher or a regular churchgoer — we invite you to worship with us and to think of St. John’s as your spiritual home.

Originally from Southern California, Rob has an undergraduate degree from Yale College, where he studied Japanese and sang with the Yale Russian Chorus, and he attended seminary at Yale Divinity School. Early in his career, he served at St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York City, as well as at churches in San Marino and Santa Barbara, CA. During his tenure at St. Dunstan’s in Carmel Valley, CA, both attendance and financial support for the parish increased by dramatically; he oversaw the expansion of their school and its facilities; and he led the church through the design and construction process for a new pipe organ and sanctuary renovation.
Rob and his wife Sarah, a journalist, co-founded and published Edible Monterey Bay for seven years, a publication focused on the local food and wine community of the region of California’s Central Coast that spans from Santa Cruz to Big Sur. They have one daughter, Zoe, who is 12 years old.

A handicap accessible ramp is available near the left side of the church’s front doors on 16th Street.
You can reach St. John’s by car or by public transportation. St. John’s is located at the corner of 16th and H streets in Northwest Washington, DC, directly across Lafayette Park and the White House.
If you come by Metro, there are several stops within walking distance. McPherson Square, located on the Orange and Blue lines, is right around the corner on Vermont Street. Take the exit toward the White House. Farragut North, located on the Red line, is a 10-minute walk to the church.
If you drive, and you come for the 7:45 service, there is street parking surrounding the church. Free valet parking is available from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Just come to the corner of 16th and H (on the H Street side) and our friendly valets will park your car!
If you ride your bike, we have a bike rack on H Street. It is located between the church and the Parish House. The Parish House is the yellow building connected to the church, where our offices and meeting rooms are.

From our organization as a parish in 1815 until today, St. John’s Church has been a powerful symbol of faith in the heart of our nation’s capital. St. John’s was designed by noted architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe to serve Episcopalians in a growing residential community in the neighborhoods in the western end of Washington.
The cornerstone of St. John’s was set on September 14, 1815. St. John’s first service was held on October 27, 1816, and the church was consecrated on December 27, 1816. Beginning with James Madison, until the present, every person who has held the office of President of the United States has attended a service at St. John’s. Several early Presidents were communicants, as were more recent ones. Thus, St. John’s is known as “the Church of the Presidents” and is registered as a National Historic Landmark. Pew 54 is the President’s Pew, and is reserved for the President’s use when in attendance at the church.
Yet the real power and prestige of St. John’s emanate from the generations of faithful parishioners who, unfailing in Christian love, compassion, and generosity, have responded to the needs of their day, reaching across our city and around the globe in service to the world. From the founding of an orphanage in 1868 to serve children of the Civil War to modern-day ministry in South Africa, Jerusalem, and the city of Washington, St. John’s has touched our nation and our world. St. John’s has more than 1,000 members. Newcomers to the Washington area are invited to become members of the parish, and visitors are always welcome at services and parish activities.
