Trinity Presbyterian Church History

Trinity Presbyterian in Gadsden celebrates 100 years

Harry D. Butler Times Correspondent

The year was 1912 — William Howard Taft was president, New Mexico and Arizona officially became states, actors Gene Kelly and Danny Thomas were born, and on Oct. 1, Gadsden’s First Presbyterian Church established a mission Sunday School in a donated house in the Hammond Mines community of North Gadsden.

That was the starting point of what ultimately became Trinity Presbyterian Church, which on Sunday will celebrate its centennial.

Helen Adams, a teacher at North Gadsden Elementary School, had been asked by her students to establish a Sunday School, and she asked the governing board of First Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member, for permission to do so. The request was granted and she held classes in a house donated by Joseph W. Hammond Jr. that also was located in Hammond Mines.

Later, a church-sponsored mission youth program, in the Steel Plant community, which was faltering, was asked to merge with the mining community mission. So the youth, with able horses and squeaky wagons, moved and transferred pews, books and an organ to the mission school. The merger was successful; three years later, attendance had grown to the point where larger facilities were needed, and the home congregation paid to have a two-story building erected.

A second new building, which would become the church’s sanctuary, was built in 1924 on the corner of Washington and Lookout streets. The first Sunday School class in the new edifice was held March 24 with 72 members enrolled. The new mission church officially was dedicated July 13 with the Rev. C.G. Partridge preaching and the Rev. Frank P. Anderson giving the dedicatory prayer.

The newly formed mission church and Sunday School continued to grow over the years, and in 1944, the Session of the First Presbyterian Church moved to have it organized into the North Alabama Presbyterian Church. It was established Nov. 12, 1944, with 50 charter members.

Forrest Adams, Howard Garrison Sr., Austin Lockmiller and Herbert Burns served on the Session; Roy Barnes, Joe Clotfelter and Loys Page served as deacons; Helen Adams Wilkinson was the organist; Joe Clotfelter was the choir director; and W.E. Morrow was superintendent of the Sunday school.

As the 1970s arrived, the growing congregation realized a larger facility was needed. A feasibility study done by the North Alabama Presbytery resulted in the purchase of 2.4 acres on Ewing Avenue (now Albert Rains Boulevard) for the site of the new church, which was officially dedicated Oct. 11, 1987.

The building committee responsible for the new construction was Renick Adams, Gary Bone, Catherine Deavor, Richmond Hammond, Harris Hurst, Mike Richards, John Ritchey, Susan Roe, David Talley and Laura Teusink.

The North Gadsden Presbyterian Church, whose original calling was to be a local church primarily serving families in the surrounding community, eventually acknowledged that it served a broader area. The name of the church was changed to Trinity Presbyterian, and it currently serves as this area’s only Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) congregation.

Sunday’s celebration will begin with a fellowship hour at 9:45 a.m. The morning worship service, featuring a slide presentation of people from the church’s past, will begin at 11 a.m. It is expected that several former pastors will attend. A catered lunch will be served afterward to all in attendance.
