Who we are
The United Methodist Church of Libertyville is the oldest church in Lake County still in operation today. Founded in 1836, our church has served as place of refuge and source of hope for residents of Lake County over three centuries and across multiple generations. Today, we continue our long tradition of using our gifts and graces to make a difference in our communities and around the world. We welcome all people and children of God to a warm, inclusive, friendly community with opportunities to grow, learn, serve and thrive as God intended.

Leader Bio:
The Rev. Dr. Jay D. Carr has an outstanding record of visionary leadership, both within the local church and within the life of the United Methodist denomination. His pastoral experience as an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church spans more than 30 years and has included serving suburban, county seat towns and rural congregations.
Jay received his Master of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and his Doctor of Ministry in church leadership from McCormick Theological Seminary. Jay has preached across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, England, Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, India and Senegal, Africa.
Jay has served as a guest lecturer at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, as a consultant on evangelism to the UMC General Board of Discipleship, and as Field Staff for the Northern Illinois Conference (NIC) for stewardship and long-range planning. He has guided congregations from New York to Minnesota as a church consultant and coach. Jay also served on the Executive Committee of the NIC Board of Ordained Ministry and as Registrar for eight years, shepherding dozens of candidates through the ordination process.
Jay and his wife Brenda both have degrees in music. They continue to engage in music, both as performers and audience members. In addition to using music as part of their ministry, they have appeared in several community theater and concert productions. They have two grown sons, Jason and Joshua, and feel blessed that both of their sons have married daughters of other pastors. Between both sons, Jay and Brenda have five grandchildren.
