Bethlehem CME Church History

In 1904, a handful of Christians, namely, Mr. and Mrs. Primus Holley, Mr. and Mrs. Ed McCray, and Mr. and Mrs. John LuSane, moved to Autauga County from Lowndesboro in search of a way of life free of severe oppression by whites. In an effort to find a “tolerable” residence for their families, these Christians, who were members of the Lowndesboro CME Church, wanted to continue to worship in their faith and religion.

When the decision was made to become permanent residents of Autauga County, plans were made to establish the first Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in Autauga County.

Other residents of Autauga County, observing and admiring these new residents’ determination to establish the church of their faith, decided to join them. Everyone involved considered the situation and presented their case to the presiding elder, then to the Annual Conference. Later, a pastor was provided to help the members build a church. Before the construction of the church began, however, the congregation worshipped under a brush arbor near Fay’s Station.

Under the leadership of C. F. Hall, pastor from 1905-1909, the place of worship was moved from Fay’s Station to East Sixth Street (then known as Happy Hollow) and was named Hall’s Chapel CME Church. Rev. W. J. Martin, successor to Rev. C. F. Hall, rebuilt the church and renamed it Bethlehem CME Church.
The following served as pastors of Bethlehem’s Happy Hollow location from 1913 to 1939: Carr, Thomas Hoyt, Baten, W. D. Brundidge, T. S. Jones, J. R. Davis, M. H. McMillian, J. R. Colvin, C. W. Humpheries, and A. Sager. In 1946, Rev M. C. Jackson was assigned pastor and moved the church to its present location. Rev. Jackson served seven years. Rev. A. Sager followed Rev. Jackson. During the faithful service of Rev. Sager, the membership increased; and gas, heat, restrooms, and wood floors were installed.
