Who we are
The Church of The Ascension is an Anglican Church, joyously seeking to grow in God’s love and to demonstrate the greatness of Christ by meeting the needs of our diverse community through the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
For almost 60 years the Church of The Ascension has served God by reaching out to our neighbors in caring and supportive ways with the love of Christ. We are a community of ordinary people blessed in wisdom, rich in humor, with an abiding affection for each other, working to build a better world. There are no perfect people at the Ascension, and you don't have to be one either to be part of the Ascension.
Christ comes to all of us just as we are - and gives us the grace not to stay that way. Through worship and service, through laughter and prayer and pastoral care, we help each other grow more and more into the image of Christ.
We are a people passionate about many things:
Serving God and people
Children and Families
Prayer
Learning and growing
Being Inclusive our embrace is wide
Worship which is diverse
Social Justice

SUNDAY WORSHIP
The Ascension’s embrace is wide - all are welcome. Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, we want to be there to help you along, we have a place for you.
Come dressed as makes you feel comfortable and don’t worry if you don’t know when to stand or sit, we don’t always know that ourselves. Our Service Bulletin has cues on when to sit and stand; just join in when and where you feel comfortable.
After the service, join us for coffee and treats which are provided following each service.
Every Sunday – Traditional: 8:00 a.m.
A traditional said Eucharist (Holy Communion) from the Book of Common Prayer.
Selected Sundays – Modern: 10:30 a.m.
(1st, 3rd, 4th, & 5th Sunday of each month)
A more modern Eucharist (Holy Communion) using the Book of Alternative Services, with a mixture of traditional and contemporary hymns and songs lead by the choir.
Contemporary Family Service: 10:30 a.m.
(2nd Sunday of each month)
The most contemporary of our services, this service of Praise and Thanksgiving within the Eucharist (Holy Communion), is led by our contemporary choir in a relaxed and informal setting.
Every Wednesday: 12 Noon
An intimate mid-week said Eucharist (Holy Communion) held in the Chapel with a light lunch following.

Church of The Ascension History
The Church of the Ascension is an Anglican Church, joyously seeking to grow in God's love and to demonstrate the greatness of Christ by meeting the needs of our diverse community through the guidance of the Holy Spirit
The Church of the Ascension has been active in the community for over fifty-five years. Work started in 1953 to make Don Mills a dream suburb. Families were attracted to modern homes and spacious areas for their children to play, - many were Anglicans.
The first services, were held in the home of Dr. W. Gooderham in Oct. 1954. As numbers grew services were moved to the Don Mills School under Rev. W. Leach, and later moved to Bethesda United Church . On Sept. 2, 1956 Rev. George Thompson, conducted the first service in what we know as the Church of the Ascension. Rev. Thompson was often seen, walking along muddy streets, knocking on doors to welcome new comers.
The parish hall was added on in 1963-64, and has served many functions over the years: (youth groups, Sunday school, badminton, dinner dances, rummage sales, coffee hour fellow- ship after services, food banks etc.) The hall has a kitchen, office for our secretary, and a connecting passage way to Thompson House Seniors Residence.
The church became very involved in the Don Mills Foundation for Seniors. “DMF” is Thompson House, a long-term care facility, and Taylor Place , a day center for seniors, both of which are attached to our church. The church originally sold the land to DMF to build on and has an ongoing relationship with the residents of Thompson House. The church set up a program called “Christian companions” with volunteers who visit resident members on a regular basis.
Since 1955 we have had five priests (and a few interims): Rev. Cannon Thompson, Rev. B. Brightling, Cannon Logan Varey, Rev. Cannon Murray Henderson and presently, Rev. Nicholas Morkel, who came to us in early 2009.
