Cloudslee United Church History
Rev. G.W. Hewitt came to the Bruce Mines Methodist charge in July 1894 and became minister of the Cloudslee Methodist Church also when it opened on October 28, 1894. The Bruce Mines choir assisted with Mrs. Peterson as organist. Later a shed was built for horses with a hall overhead which was used for the various church socials. The first wedding took place on June 26, 1895 and united in marriage Margaret McCrea and Lancelot Johnson.
Mr. Wm. Grigg had chosen land for a graveyard in the late 1870’s and was the first to be buried there on June 14, 1879. In 1949 more land was purchased and again in 1977 to enlarge the cemetery to its present size.
The Presbyterian Church at Milltown ceased to have services during World War I due to scarcity of ministers. For a time they worshipped at the Cloudslee church by themselves, then Milltown Church was closed and part of the congregation joined the Cloudslee congregation. Thus the Union Church was established in July 1917. In June 1938, in a general realignment of charges in the district, Cloudslee was transferred from the Bruce Mines to the Rydal Bank field. Rev. Reba Hern, pastor on the Rydal Bank field became Cloudslee’s new minister.
The first meeting of a ladies group, the Women’s Auxiliary, was held in the summer of 1919 at the home of Mrs. Robert McEwen. There was also a Women’s Missionary Society. In 1962 these two groups joined to become the United Church Women. A Labour Day fowl supper put on by these ladies is anticipated by people near and far to this very day.
In 1950 a basement was built under the church. At the same time new siding was put on, a vestibule added to the front and Sunday School rooms at the back. When Alma Heights congregation was dissolved in 1968, their Memorial Organ was placed in Cloudslee Church. The oil furnace was also given, together with sufficient money for installation.
The 60th Anniversary of Cloudslee United was held August 22, 1954 with J.H. Martin as guest speaker. The 75th Anniversary was held August 3, 1969 with Rev. Peter Renner preaching the sermon. When the 990th Anniversary was celebrated in 1984, the church underwent repairs both inside and out for the important occasion.
