Who we are
At Elkhorn Church of Christ we strive to live as children of God, brothers and sisters living as an extended family, living to please God, and living to support each other. We work hard, but we find plenty of time to enjoy our fellowship.
We use God's word, the Holy Bible to guide us. We are an independent congregation whose only authority is God. It is our objective to, through study, learn God's will, and together find strength through Jesus Christ, to do God's will.
This congregation has elders who view their position as 'shepherds', who guide the congregation, listen to its' needs, and try to fill those needs within the structure of our interpretation of God's will. This is not an easy task, but this is our goal.
When you attend our worship service this is what you might expect:
We are not in the business of judging people. We accept people as they are. During our service you are welcome to join in as much as you are comfortable with, or just observe. A typical service includes; congregational singing, the Lord's Supper (sometimes called communion, or the Eucharist), public prayer lead by a member of the congregation, usually a sermon, and an offering.
You will be welcome to join in the singing if you choose.
During the Lord's supper unleavened bread and grape juice are blessed and passed around, you may partake or just pass it on. The bread and wine are emblems representing Jesus Christ, the son of God and our savior. We observe the Lord's Supper every Sunday.
The offering is intended for our members, if you are visiting you may give, but are not expected to.
An attended nursery is available for young children.
In our Bible studies we study together as a group, lead by a member of the congregation, with open public discussion.

Elkhorn Church of Christ History
In 1853 the Baptist Society of Elkhorn built a small building on the ground now known as 100 West Court Street, in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. It is believed that building was the first place of worship in Elkhorn.
After 32 years the first building was moved away and a larger building was built in its place. The cornerstone under today’s building reads 1885 and 127 years later it sits firmly planted, however it has been a rocky road and that stone has supported more than one building.
The building was heavily damaged by fire in 1907 and was repaired, however in 1924 fire struck again destroying the building. In 1926 the Baptists, being a resilient group, built the existing structure. We are told horses and pulleys were used to lift the pipe organ into the loft.
Before the 1924 fire, in 1919, an older Universalist church building had been bought and moved to the rear (north) of the Baptist building. This was first used as a community house, but later became the recreation hall for the Baptist Society. This building was not damaged in the 1924 fire and the Baptists held services in it until the present building was built. The recreation hall was remodeled and contained a gymnasium, bowling alleys and a parlor. it was used by many youth and young adults until it was razed in 1972. The space is now a lawn where children play and outdoor activities are held, especially during Vacation Bible School.
The First Baptist Church of Elkhorn held its mortgage burning ceremony April 15, 1945, and in 1981 the Mormon Church purchased the property.
Meanwhile during the summer of 1980, a few miles away in Delavan, Wisconsin, a Church of Christ congregation was born and began meeting in a rented room at the Elk’s Club. Area ministers; Dewayne Spivey and Guy Marshall from Janesville, and Larry Bertram from Waukesha rotated filling the pulpit on Sunday afternoons.
The worship services moved to Sunday mornings in Al Holt’s basement when he became the first full time minister for the group.
Next came the move to Elkhorn when Lyle and Virginia Thomas made room in their home for the services. The ‘pulpit’ was shared between members Keith Barclay, Jim Coehoorn and Robert Egnoski. Seeking more space, the ‘upper room’ above a business at 250 South Broad Street in Elkhorn was to become their last rented place of worship.
Coehoorn, the current minister, assumed the position as full-time minister in 1989 and four years later the band of about thirty five members purchased 100 West Court Street from the Mormons. The price tag was $90,000 and a loan of $55,000 was needed to make the purchase.
Outside support, mostly toward the minister’s salary has been provided over the years from generous congregations. The Southside church in Milwaukee has blessed the assembly both monetarily and spiritually since 1989, the church at Tuscumbia, Alabama since 1996. Various other congregations have provided shorter term help which has given steady growth.
A significant milestone came in 2006 when Jim Coehoorn and Jim Frost were appointed elders giving the congregation organized leadership and establishing it an independent church. A third elder, Scot Cerka, was added to the team in 2011.
Another notable event came in October of 2012 when the mortgage on this corner on the town square was paid in full. This was made possible by the response of members to a special offering. On November 18th at a fellowship meal the flock celebrated their increased financial independence by giving thanks to God for his many blessings.
In June of each year Vacation Bible School is hosted at the building for five days offering Bible lessons and recreation for children. About 100 children from the area attend. Other community services include clothing give-aways twice a year and caroling at nursing homes during the Christmas holidays. Pot-luck fellowship meals are held following worship service the second Sunday of each month.
This congregation is involved in activities with other churches of Christ in the northern Midwest which include retreats, seminars, teen events and supporting Wisconsin Christian Youth Camp at Black River Falls, Wisconsin. Being in a vacation resort area this assembly is often the home-away-from-home for traveling Christians, especially in the summer months.
The purpose of the church is to honor and worship God, our creator. Bible education is provided to better understand the will of God. Guidance and assistance is offered to each other as needed. Bible classes are held at 9:15 am Sundays and 7:00 pm Wednesdays, worship service is at 10:30 am Sundays.
It is the desire of this group to remain a strong and positive influence for the community of Elkhorn.
