Who we are

We are the body of Christ. We are sinners who have been saved by grace. We are a church made up entirely of imperfect people, and that means you are welcome here with us.

We are a church dedicated to proclaiming the Word of God, a church who gathers expectantly to hear a Word from God, a church dedicated to equipping the saints for the work of ministry, and a church who recognizes that each of us falls short of God’s glory and thus has a desperate need for a Savior — Jesus Christ.

Mission Statement

To make more and better disciples of Jesus Christ.

Our Future

Our future is in making more and better disciples of Jesus Christ here in Northeast Iowa. As we continue to grow we invite you to walk the road with us!

Our growing church body is eagerly looking to expand in our ministry and add more discipleship groups as the needs arise.

Pastor Ethan is the Senior Pastor of Faith Bible Fellowship Church, which first began as a small group and is expanding into a growing church family. After first fighting against God’s call on his life to ministry, Ethan let God direct his steps and began pursuing full-time ministry.

It was through this that he met his wonderful wife, Charity, while attending Barclay College. Before moving to Iowa, Ethan ministered for two years as a part-time pastor in Bucklin, Kansas. There, God grew his love for the Church and developed his ability to preach and teach. Now, Pastor Ethan continues his ministry, desiring to live and preach with bold conviction so that believers may be equipped for ministry, so that the Holy Spirit may draw others to Himself, and that God may be glorified in all.

Family

Ethan is married to his beautiful wife, and partner in ministry, Charity. They are currently expecting the birth of their first child in late January 2024, and look forward to growing their family in West Union.

History of EFCA

The Evangelical Free Church came to the US from Scandinavia, where “free” meant free from state control. It now means free from a central controlling governing body, which means the denomination doesn’t govern the local churches. They, instead, depend on the active participation of pastors and laypeople in their own churches.

The term “evangelical” refers to our commitment to proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ and our commitment to the authority of the Bible for guiding faith and practice. Today the term “evangelical” is used as a broad category for churches with these same commitments.

The mission statement of the Evangelical Free Church is to glorify God by multiplying healthy churches among all people. In 2014, the EFCA reported a weekly attendance of 371,191 in 1,500 congregations. In the United States, there are 1,314 EFCA churches and 176 church plants with 270 multi-ethnic churches and 102 multi-site or second language services. Close to 550 missionaries serve in more than 80 countries. As of 2000, California had the largest number of congregations with 175. However, membership is primarily concentrated in the Midwest. The Central District was founded in 1898 and currently serves the churches of Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, and SE South Dakota. Currently, there are 131 churches in the Central District with 12 others in different stages of joining. The doctrinal position of The Evangelical Free Church of America is summarized in our ten-article Statement of Faith.

The core beliefs of this statement are:

That the scriptures, both Old and New Testament, are the inspired Word of God, without error in the original writings.
That there is one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
That Jesus Christ is true God and true man. He died on the cross, a sacrifice for our sins. He arose bodily from the dead. Only those who place their trust in Jesus Christ and Him alone for their salvation are true members of the body of Christ, and thus able to be members of the local church.
That the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and to indwell, guide, instruct and empower the believer for godly living and service.

Faith Bible Fellowship History

Twenty years ago, there was no Faith Bible Fellowship, but there was a growing interest among several community members to find a Bible-believing church closer to home. With this interest, an arrangement was made for the group to begin meeting in the basement of a local agricultural business at no charge. For two years, we averaged 6-7 people a Sunday and had very little structure. In 2006, we were designated as an EFCA “Church Plant Project.” Over the next several months, a small group met with Kent McKinnon (a church planter for the Central District EFCA) to work through the details necessary to become an Evangelical Free Church. In 2011, we became an official EFCA Church Plant. Finally, on March 5, 2012, Faith Bible Fellowship was granted official membership as an EFCA congregation.

By 2014, the church moved from its meeting place of nine years to the library in the NFV High School. As the congregation grew, we moved from the library to the high school cafeteria. About this time, the congregation averaged an attendance of 30-35 people.

In May of 2015, the church, partnering with the EFCA Central District, was able to hire Dan Doebel as a part-time pastor. He and his wife Kim moved to West Union and became an active force in the community. During his time, the church was still looking for a permanent place to call home.

Five years later, in August of 2020, the church purchased the building where we currently reside as a body. The building was originally a hog barn and later became an auction house. It wasn’t new or fancy, but promised so much potential for a variety of ministry activities.

Two years later, after faithfully serving the church for six-and-a-half years, Pastor Dan departed from Faith Bible Fellowship. Tennis Heuton was appointed as interim pastor and the church began seeking a new, full-time pastor.

In mid-2023, the congregation voted to extend a call to Ethan Bogan for the position of Senior Pastor. He and his wife, Charity, moved from Kansas and began their ministry in October 2023. We are extremely excited to see what God has in store for our church body under their leadership.
