Local outreach & community activities:

Twice a year, corresponding with the Yellow Springs Street Fair, we host festivals open to the public. The second Friday in June, we kick off our Strawberry Festival, which has its roots in the early 20th century. We serve locally-sourced strawberries, baked goods, Young’s ice cream, and beverages. The Yellow Springs Community Band, under the direction of our Musical Director, James Johnston, plays to the delight of the hundreds of attendees. Often we have a local band or musician play as well. The fun continues on Saturday we thousands of persons descend upon Yellow Springs for the Street Fair. All are welcome; check our events calendar for specific details. On the second Saturday in October, we hold our annual Apple Festival, serving locally-sourced apples, Young’s ice cream, and other baked goodies. Once again, all are welcome!

Throughout the year we host various events and engage in ministry projects, from Clothes That Work—aimed at providing appropriate clothing to help women dress for professional job interviews—to Sponsor a Family, a program that provides money to an anonymous local family that is in need during the Christmas holidays. Our building is a veritable beehive of activity throughout the year, hosting the Yellow Springs Chamber Music Society; the local Boy, Girl, and Cub Scout troops; AA meetings; exercise classes; and many other events. Check our online calendar for updated information.

First Presbyterian Church History

First Presbyterian Church of Yellow Springs was organized in 1855, incorporated in 1859, and the original building which still stands at the center of town was dedicated in 1860. Presbyterians from throughout the surrounding areas had been gathering as early as 1812, and by 1851 meetings were held in local homes with discussions of a bricks and mortar building well underway. Monies were secured, and building began. On March 8, 1860, the charter was signed and our church was born.

Over the years, the original building was altered to include our bell tower; some of our land was sold to allow the local library to have a home (the building now houses the Office of the Superintendent of Yellow Springs Schools); and in 1955, Westminster Hall was added, largely owed to the effort of the church’s youth, who gathered funds. Truly, our history is marked with the tireless efforts of countless people who have given of their time, talent, and treasure.

We are a member of the Presbytery of the Miami Valley, the local governing body for the PC (USA), of the Ohio Synod (the regional body), and the General Assembly (the national body). Presbyterianism grows out of the Protestant Reformation, most specifically the Reform movement ofHuldrychZwingli and John Calvin. As a denomination, our name refers to our form of governance: “presbyters,” or elders, are responsible for the running of the church through a body called “Session.” At First Presbyterian, nine (9) Ruling Elders (lay persons elected by the congregation to serve a three-year term) serve on Session, with the pastor (or Teaching Elder) acting as a non-voting Moderator. Six Deacons also serve, primarily for three-year terms, as outreach to the larger community. All decisions concerning the Church are made by Session, and must be done in the light of day. Presbyterianism is concerned primarily with the empowerment of congregants to have a direct say in how the Church is run.
