Who we are
What We Believe
We are a worshipping church being transformed by Jesus that equips people to participate in God’s redemptive work.
John Knox is a Presbyterian church with a Reformed theology. As such, we recognize that the primary authority for us in all our faith and life is our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, God’s Living Word, as the Scriptures bear witness to him. However, there have been times throughout history when it has been necessary for the Reformed Church to articulate its faith and witness as lead by the Holy Spirit in response to different circumstances and challenges at certain times and in certain places. These articulations of faith and witness are found in the various creeds and confessions of the PCUSA in it’s Book of Confessions.
These confessional statements are subject to the authority of Jesus Christ and subordinate to Scripture, nevertheless, they are standards giving witness to the faith of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. These statements reflect our understanding of God and what God expects of us at different times in history, but all are faithful to the fundamental beliefs described above.
The Reformed tradition has certain characteristics and convictions found in ten essential beliefs or tenets, which are reflected in the PCUSA’s creeds and confessions. Even though we share these common beliefs, Presbyterians understand that God alone is lord of the conscience, and it is up to each individual to understand what these principles mean in his or her life.
The first two beliefs we share with Christians in all times and in all places taken from the faith of the Church universal, particularly the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed.
1. Trinity – God the Father, who is over us, God the Son, who is with us and for us, and God the Holy Spirit, who is in us and among us.
2. Incarnation – In Jesus Christ, the Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us. In Jesus Christ, the Triune God is revealed.
The next two we share with those who took part in the Reformation of the Church in the 16th century in their re-affirmation of God’s grace in Jesus Christ as revealed in Scripture.
3. Salvation by grace through faith.
4. Scripture is the Word of God, and our only rule of faith and obedience.
In the remaining six beliefs, the PCUSA affirms the faith and witness of the Reformed
tradition. Central to this tradition is the affirmation of the majesty, holiness, and providence
of God who creates, sustains, rules, and redeems the world in the freedom of sovereign
righteousness and love.
5. Sovereignty and Providence of God
6. The election of the people of God for service as well as for salvation.
7. God’s involvement in the covenant community of God’s people.
8. A faithful stewardship of ourselves, our gifts, our resources, and the earth.
9. The recognition of the human sin of idolatry, tyranny, and disobedience.
10. The commitment of believers to justice, liberation, and obedience.

Chris’s vision is to help foster a healthy and vibrant congregation that forms people to embody the character of Christ in the world. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies from Westmont College, a Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary, and a Master of Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary. Chris is currently working on his doctorate from Fuller Seminary in the area of spiritual leadership.
Before coming to Knox, Chris served several churches in California and is interested in the practice of leadership, vision casting, discipleship and justice, theological reflection, and writing. His great joy is watching God’s kingdom unfold in the hearts and lives of everyday people.
Chris met his wife, Devon, at Westmont College, and together they enjoy an active lifestyle with their three children, Hannah, Abby, and Lucas. His other pursuits include running, surfing (not so much anymore), skiing and snowboarding, hiking, gardening, camping, and anything outside.

Sunday mornings at 8:30am and 10:10am
Our services are typically an hour and a half, and they blend the old with the new. You will find our worship to be joyful at times and at times solemn and reflective. You will find solid, biblical preaching with application for your life. You will find new songs led by a band along with more traditional hymns accompanied by the organ. You will also find a time of prayer and communion at each service. You will find our services to be multi-generational. We have everyone from infants, and new families all the way to retired folks.

Our Story
“Built on Jesus Christ”
The Seattle Times for December 11, 1954 carried an article entitled: “John Knox Church Nears Opening”. It read, in part: “A church is being built at First Avenue South and Normandy Road for a congregation that does not yet exist. The church will be known as John Knox Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Richard E. Johnson has been here since September making arrangements to get in the church. Mr. Johnson said an opening service will be held January 2. A Christmas Eve service also may be held in the Church. The church will cost about $50,000. The Board of American Missions of the denomination has made a $15,000 grant and will carry a mortgage on the balance at 1% interest. The church will have a chapel seating 160 people. An overflow room which will double as a fellowship hall will seat an additional 60. There will also be 12 classrooms for the Sunday School.”
The original sanctuary was completed in time to hold a Christmas Eve service at 5:30 PM in 1954. A Service of Dedication took place on January 30. In the bulletin for that service, Pastor Johnson wrote: “As we look at the building, new and beautiful and ready for use, may we be reminded that the building is not nearly as important as the people who come here for worship and Christian instruction. The building itself is cold and lifeless without the warmth of dedicated lives… The building is constructed of wood, brick, mortar, and other materials; the Church is built on the foundation of Jesus Christ and out of our prayer, faith, love, and personal dedication.” By the end of 1955, John Knox had 165 charter members.
Named after John Knox, the 16th century Scottish pastor and statesman who was largely responsible for establishing the Church of Scotland, our congregation has followed Knox’s firm commitment to biblical authority and and preaching which interprets the Scriptures and applies them to everyday living. Other deeply-rooted distinctions of our ministry include: enhancing worship through music, providing strong educational opportunities for children, youth and adults, creating a warm sense of family through small groups, encouraging the idea that all members are ministers who use their gift of service, and prioritizing extensive participation in off-campus missions through both finances and personal involvement.
