Who we are

Kirkcaldy Congregational Church is a church in transition.

Following discussions between the two Congregational Churches in Kirkcaldy (Pathhead and West End) the decision was taken to form a new church, and to bring the two existing churches to a close.

It was agreed that the new church will use the former West End building in Kirkcaldy High Street for its activities, and that the Pathhead building be sold. The sale took place in October 2017, and just before this on 17th September, a very moving final service took place in the Pathhead building.

On 24th September the two congregations came together to form a new congregation, and they will now operate as a single Church. A process has to be followed to set the new church up in law, following which the affairs of the existing churches will be wound up, and assets transferred to the new church. This process has begun, and with the guidance of the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator, we hope that the new church will be established within the next few months.

The church meets on Sunday mornings at 10.30am, for its main act of worship. Other activities will develop in the near future, and there is a real sense of anticipation as we look to the future!

Leader Bio:
Kevin Flett was minister of the two Kirkcaldy churches from May 2015, having served the Pathhead Church on a part-time basis since November 2011. He is now the minister of the new Congregation.

Before moving to Fife in 2011, he lived in South-West Scotland for almost 10 years where in addition to serving in a small church as non-stipendiary minister, he worked for a third sector organisation with homeless people, and people with addictions, as well as spending time working with the NHS and the local authority in strategic planning and commissioning social care services.

Previously he served in Baptist Churches, having been ordained and accredited within the Baptist Union of Scotland in the early 1990's. He studied at Glasgow University, the Open University and Dundee University, and trained for ministry at the Scottish Baptist College. Kevin transferred his ministerial accreditation to the Congregational Federation in 2016.

He was born and brought up in a coastal community in the far North, and still maintains an interest in all things nautical. He has a small boat and is a member of a local sailing club.

He is married to Vikki and they have a daughter who lives in the south of England. Vikki works for a local charity, and is the "reserve" organist for the church.

Kevin sees his faith journey as an ongoing process of learning and discovery, where he seeks to be open to new ideas and fresh understanding.

Kirkcaldy Congregational Church History

West End Congregational

West End Congregational Church is a small open minded church which has been part of the life of Kirkcaldy since 1800. Sunday worship reflects the ethos of our liberal tradition of faith, where, in taking the bible seriously, but not literally, we explore how people can live with integrity and faith in today’s world.

Though we are traditional in our form of worship, we are progressive in our theology, and seek to be open and inclusive in our church life. This means we do not insist on conformity, and encourage an enquiring and searching approach to faith. We reach beyond the walls of the traditional church through members and friends who express their faith in service to others and by working with others to achieve a just and peaceful world.

Worship takes place each Sunday at 11.15 am, normally lasting for about an hour, and a play area is available for younger children when required.

We normally follow the readings of the Narrative Lectionary, and mark the seasons of the Christian Year (Advent, Christmas and Epiphany; Lent, Holy Week and Easter; Pentecost). There are often special services and additional times of worship during those seasons. Communion is observed as part of our worship, normally on the first Sundays of January, March, May, July September and November. There are additional communion services at Easter and Christmas. We hold firmly to the belief that the communion table is open to all who are seeking deeper fellowship with Christ and his people and a deeper understanding of faith. Communion is available to adults and children.

Pathhead Congregational

Pathhead Congregational Church formally came into being in the autumn of 1867 with 23 members. In 1869 it was agreed that a chapel should be built, and this was completed and opened for worship in 1871.

Over the years there has been a succession of ministers and local leaders who have served the church and supported the membership in serving the local community.

Currently we have around 25 members and a number of friends who support the ongoing work of the church. We meet for worship each Sunday at 10.00am, with communion on the second Sunday of each month (we have an open table, where all are welcome including children) and tea and coffee after the service on the third Sunday of each month. At different times of the year we hold family services. We often join with other local churches for joint services during Advent and Holy Week. We also are working more closely with our sister Congregational Church, West End.

Through the week we host some community activities, including a dog class and the local Carers Choir, the Carefree Chorus. A Craft Group meets on Wednesday evenings, and once in a while we hold coffee mornings.

Some new people have joined with us in recent years, and the comment often is “you’re all really friendly!” we certainly try to be, and to offer a very uncluttered approach to Christian faith and worship.
