Who we are

Living Hope Church desires to magnify Jesus Christ by embracing His vision of disciples making disciples. We have a commitment to worship Christ together, to witness to our faith in Christ, to pursue discipleship with others in small groups, and to serve in the church and in the community. Our prayer is that you will be blessed and strengthened by the power of Jesus, and that you will live a life of abundance in fellowship, joy and liberty. We study the Word, practice what we learn, and in the process grow together. We hope to see you soon!

Come be blessed and strengthened by the power of Jesus! Live a life of fellowship, joy and liberty. Study the Word and grow with Living Hope Church!

Leader Bio:
The Rev. Mark C. Alvis accepted the call to the pastorate of Union Congregational Church following a vote by the congregation on Sunday, April 10, 2005. A member of the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference since 1990, Pastor Alvis has served on its Board of Directors and Nominating Committee.

Mark is a graduate of Biola College and Talbot Theological Seminary. He loves the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference because it welcomes believers from a wide spectrum of evangelical viewpoints. The denomination stands firm on the essential doctrines of the faith and practices charity on issues where good people have differed for hundreds of years. After several decades of teaching and study, he has found that the conclusions of older scholarship are often superior to some of the views espoused by the "new kids" on the block.

Having served three pastorates in California, Rev. Alvis came to North Aurora from Middletown, New York, where he had been pastor of First Congregational Church. In introducing himself to the North Aurora congregation, he commented, "I am a team player. I believe Gods blueprint for local churches is for a plurality of elders who work together for the welfare of the body. Nothing excites me more than seeing lay people minister effectively."

Pastor Alvis began his ministry in North Aurora on June 26, 2005. He and his wife Cindy have five children and two grandchildren.

History

On September 9, 2001, Christ the King Church held its first service in Batavia, Illinois. A year earlier, Pastor Ken Carr and Pastor Douglas O’Donnell came to College Church in Wheaton to cast a vision for the second plant of College Church. A few months later, 30 adults and 20 children formed the core of this new church in Batavia, a Western suburb of Chicago. In 2006, Pastor O’Donnell returned to College Church to start the third church plant. Soon after, Pastor Jeff Holwerda took his place, continuing to serve as the church’s Associate Pastor.

Throughout its history, CtK has held to its purpose statement of being “a reaching, teaching church, fueled by God’s word and focused on Jesus Christ.” Since its inception, CtK has been centered on teaching God’s people his Word. Thus, they continue to offer Sunday School for all ages, men’s and women’s Bible studies and weekly prayer meetings. Moreover, this teaching church is a reaching church. Each Sunday night (September - April) they host an AWANA program, which draws over 100 children from the surrounding area. CtK also supports 9 missionaries. We hope to continue to grow in grace, godliness and perseverance for the pleasure and glory of God.

Christ the King Church has a rich heritage rooted in College Church in Wheaton. Founded in 1878, College Church is an independent, inter-denominational church located near Wheaton College. Under the direction of Pastor Hughes and following the New Testament pattern for evangelism, College Church planted its first church, Holy Trinity, in Hyde Park, Chicago in 1998. College Church then planted Christ the King in Batavia in 2001, followed by New Covenant in Naperville in 2006 and New Hope in Lombard in 2010.

Like College Church, Christ the King Church embraces the axiom, 'In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.' The leadership at Christ the King Church is committed to similar foundational principles that will build a church whose chief purpose is to glorify God.
