Who we are

North Congregational Church is a voice for progressive Christian Faith in the Mid-Hudson Valley. We welcome all who seek to enrich their spiritual journey. We respect and honor all other faith traditions and participate fully in interfaith activities through the Greater Middletown Interfaith Council. We beleive that the Gospel of Jesus Christ teaches us to love God and each other, and to reach out to a community and a world that needs help. We believe deeply in issues of justice and peace and we are in covenant with The United Church of Christ through the New York Conference of The United Church of Christ. These relationships nurture our work and places us on the cutting edge of the resurgence of the mainline church in our community and across the country. In these covenants we also partner with The Hudson Mohawk Association of the New York Conference of The United Church of Christ.

North Congregational UCC History

Our History

In 1889 our congregation began in the north end of Middletown to serve the neighborhoods of the railroad workers and their families. Our current building was dedicated in 1931 and was quickly dubbed the "People's Cathedral," a place of welcome for all, an idea we still fully embrace. Our beautiful and unusual stone structure, with its pillared portico and huge staircase on Linden Avenue, is visible from many parts of Middletown, and though we are in the tradition of New England Congregationalism to most of the locals we are simply "North Church," having joined the United Church of Christ shortly after it was formed in 1957.

The vision of North Church in the 21st Century is to become known as a place of extravagant welcome. Recognizing that many of our neighbors are looking for meaningful religious experience and spiritual growth, we have opened our doors widely to anyone who wishes to join us on our faith journey. Our welcome is regardless of race, culture, faith background, age, physical challenge, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, or any other human condition. We especially welcome, as full partners in our ministry,
those who may feel disenfranchised by other faith communities.

We believe that our most important work is yet to be done, and we hope you’ll consider joining us for an exciting rebirth of outreach in the city of Middletown and to the surrounding areas.
