Who we are
Open Arms Christian Church is a congregationally governed Church that is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Come grow in the Spirit of Christ and help us make Disciples of ALL people.
We welcome you to our new beginning. While the Disciples of Christ Christian church began long ago in a log cabin in Kentucky back in 1804, our little church was founded on July 10, 2016, after it's church of origin voted to sell the property and start anew, after 40 years in the service of Christ. The remaining members wanted to continue in service, so we mustered up all our resources, help, and prayers and started anew. With Christian unity as a reason for existing, Disciples shun establishing rules that too often divide people. Instead they stress freedom and diversity. We are a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord's table, as God has welcomed us.

Born and raised in Kilgore, Texas, our Intentional Transitional Minister, John G. Burton, is a native Texan. He has a sister, who is an art teacher. While his dad was an elder and his mom a Bible teacher in their church, there was no particular push for John to go into ministry, as his dad preferred he go into the oil field. But God had found another way to plant the seed, and we can thank Dan Morgan, who cultivated John, albeit unknowingly to him, to go into ministry by the time he finished high school. He did his undergraduate studies at T.C.U., at Rockwall, and graduated from Vanderbilt Divinity, then spent 2 years studying Interim Ministry/Networking. He was the Associate Minister at a church in Lincoln, Nebraska and in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He also was the Minister at several churches, starting at Carlisle, Iowa; Bethany, Missouri; Irving North, Irving, Texas; and First Christian, Denton, Texas. He’s been married to his beautiful wife, Phyllis, for 29 years, and they have 3 grown wonderful children; Charity, Aaron, and Joy. As our Transistional Minister since July 10 of this year, he has managed to give us support and encouragement to recreate our church as a positive example of the hands and feet of Jesus. And while change is hard, he’s managed to point us in a direction we didn’t know we could go and to get us excited about it! We’re very grateful and excited we found him!
