Who we are
Welcome to Poteet First United Methodist Church. Thanks for checking in with us to learn a little more about who we are and Whose we are.
We hope that after learning a little more about us here you’ll want to join us in person for church school and worship each Sunday morning.
What to expect on Sunday mornings:
We start with lively Sunday School for all ages at 9:30 a.m. and follow that up with a coffee fellowship at 10:15-ish. Our church family loves to share – we bring enough for all to enjoy!
Our 11 a.m. worship service is traditional in style and brimming with substance. We sing familiar hymns, pray with and for each other, and hear dynamic sermons from our pastor, Rev. Dave Collett. (He doesn’t always wear that fancy robe!)
Speaking of how we dress for worship: “come as you are” describes us perfectly! You can roll on in in your jeans or Sunday best – or your Sunday best jeans. Be comfortable.
We go easy on our first-time worshippers – we will only shower you with acceptance, try to make you feel welcomed and act to assure you of God’s love. We won’t make you sing a solo, preach a sermon, or tell your life story – at least not on your first Sunday!

The Rev. David Collett (also answers to Pastor Dave, Preacher, Dave-oh and Hey, You!) is a life-long Methodist and lover of God. His roots were nurtured deep in the sandy beaches of South Florida where his family was active in the ministries and mission of Park Temple United Methodist Church in Ft. Lauderdale. It was there that Dave heard the early call to a life of service to God through music ministry and he furthered his musical education at Stetson University in Deland, Florida. He then pursued two graduate degrees at Southern Methodist University – one from Perkins School of Theology (master of sacred music) and one from the Meadows School of the Arts (master of music – choral conducting).
After consecration and ordination and a fruitful career as minister of music in medium and large churches in Texas and Alabama, Dave felt a new call – to preach the Word. He now finds his roots delving into the sandy soil of Atascosa County as the pastor of Poteet First UMC since July of 2016. His greatest joy is helping individuals reach a new level of understanding of God’s love for all of us and the joy, hope, peace, comfort, and responsibility that comes with that love.
