Who we are

Welcome to Sacred Heart Catholic Church Community. The Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish family extends a warm welcome to all new parishioners and invites all members of our faith community to a deeper sense of belonging to our faith community.

Our identity as a people of God is rooted in our shared belief in God as Our Father and Jesus Christ as Lord to us all. We desire to be a community of brothers and sisters for one another, united by the Holy Spirit, and our call to live the Lord's presence in our daily lives. We pray that we shall be united in our vision as a believing, praying and caring community.

We pray to the Holy Spirit in guiding us to the ministry that we are called to serve, to become active believers by works of faith in our parish. We seek a deeper spiritual formation in our Christian life, recognizing and sharing our particular gifts and talents with the community. We especially encourage you to experience more completely a sense of belonging and to share more fully the gift of yourself in thanksgiving to the Lord for your call to minister to others, as we continue our faith journey with Christ, our brothers and sisters.

God's graces and blessing be with you all.

Your brother in Christ,
Fr. Dennis R. Juan,
Pastor

LITURGICAL MINISTRIES

Altar Servers
The role of the server is a privileged ministry. Individuals who are in fourth grade or older, have received their First Communion, and attend Mass regularly are welcome to sign up to be an Altar Server.

Altar Ministry Guild

This ministry is responsible for maintaining and cleaning the Altar, sacred vessels and laundering the linens used during our Mass Liturgy.

Church Cleaning Guild

This ministry is made up of a small group who vacuum the church carpet and dust the pews, etc., keeping our church clean for the weekend Masses.

Greeters

These ministers provide a very special service of hospitality. They are the first people that visitors or parishioners meet when they come to Sacred Heart for Mass. We show our great hospitality by welcoming them with Christian love.

Lectors

The role of the lector is to proclaim the Word of God at parish liturgies. Lectors need to have the ability to read aloud clearly and well, with an understanding of scripture.

Ushers

They are responsible for seating parishioners, assisting with keeping the reverence during the Mass, taking up the collection, distributing any timely materials after Mass, and straightening hymnals and Mass booklets after each Mass.

Ministers to the Homebound

Experienced Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers share Jesus Christ in the Eucharistic with those members of our community unable to join us here at Sacred Heard due to health issues. In addition to visiting individuals, these ministers also visit the area nursing homes.

Religious Education

Classes are held after the Sunday 9 am mass. Classes start at 10:15 am and last one hour. The religious education that our children receive is very important to prepare them for the Sacraments and life. Teachers and assistants are always needed. Please consider this great ministry of sharing your faith.

SOCIAL MINISTRIES

Parish Social Events

This committee organizes and prepares the food/snacks for the many parish social events. This is a great way to meet and get to know the whole Parish community. Many events are scheduled each year so watch the calendar. Volunteers are needed for planning and to help on the day of the event.

Funerals

This ministry provides food for the family of the deceased and their friends on the day of the funeral. These volunteers coordinate and facilitate the luncheons. Parish members are asked to support these luncheons by providing a covered dish and by helping serve.

Sunday Socials

Sunday Socials offer parishioners the opportunity to share a few minutes of fellowship on Sunday morning after the 9 am Mass. These weekly gatherings are enhanced with coffee and breakfast breads. What's better than sharing food with your fellow parishioners?! New volunteers are always welcome to join this ministry.

50+ Club

An informal group of Parishioners ages 50 and over. The Club meets on the second Friday of each month at 11 am (except June-July-August), starting with a shared meal and followed by a meeting. The meetings may feature a visiting speaker, of a spiritual program. The goal of this group is to share fellowship, learn, and support the Parish through club projects and activities.

Men's Group

This group invites the men of the parish community to gather on the first Thursday of each month at 7 pm to share their faith and fellowship. The programs address many topics including social, religious, parish life, fun, and fellowship.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church History

The first Mass in Griffin took place in 1879 with five Catholics in attendance. Visiting priests periodically ministered to the spiritual needs of the people.

On May 2, 1910, the Sacred Heart Church was dedicated on North Hill Street as a mission in Griffin. The pastor of St. Joseph's Church in Athens served Griffin as one of his missions. And Plans for a new church on MacArthur Drive were begun in 1980. It was more than a 100 years after the arrival of the Catholics, a new church was dedicated by Archbishop Thomas A. Donnellan. On December 18, 1982, Sacred Heart Catholic Church was dedicated. The marble altar, tabernacle, Stations of the Cross, and the statues of Mary and Joseph from the North Hill Street church are used in the new church.

The church featured a round, stained-glass window with a biblical Sacred Heart designed by a Trappist monk of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers. A large crucifix above the altar was the gift of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, a Redemptorist parish in Boston, Massachusetts. Now we have daily masses and 3 masses on the weekends. Our religious education classes serve our children from kinder-garden to tenth grade. We have a teen group and a women group, also we have the knights of Columbus. Not forgetting all the wonderful volunteers of our parish family, including our teachers and staff who are also volunteers from our parish.

Every Sunday our community gathers after mass as a family for our Sunday social. There are several parish social each year, our parish feast, our parish picnic, etc.

We look forward to your visit and sharing with us in our Mass Liturgy.

Fr. Dennis Pastor
