Who we are

St. Barbara Parish is located at Old Mission Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, CA. We are a faith community that strives to live the gospel in prayer, formation, evangelization, outreach and stewardship in the Franciscan tradition.

The “Mission of the Mission”

The following mission statement for the “greater Mission” of Old Mission Santa Barbara emerged from work done over the last few years and attempts to capture the breadth and spirit of our Franciscan call to service.

Old Mission Santa Barbara bears witness to the Franciscan missionary spirit through service to God and God’s people; as stewards of the Franciscan heritage in the West, we welcome all and strive to build a future based on reconciliation and justice which honors creation and all people.

Santa Barbara Mission History

The Santa Barbara Mission was established on the Feast of Saint Barbara, December 4, 1786 and was the tenth of twenty-one California Missions to be founded by the Spanish Franciscans.

More than 200 years later, the Mission continues to be the chief cultural and historic landmark in the city of Santa Barbara. Home to a community of Franciscan friars, a beautiful church with a large and active parish; a museum and gift shop; a cemetery and mausoleum; and twelve acres of beautifully landscaped gardens.

The Mission’s commanding position and grand proportions, graceful lines and soft, blending colors all reinforce her title, “Queen of the Missions.”
