Who we are
Second Reformed Church is an ancient-future community at 132 Elmwood Ave, Irvington, New Jersey 07111.
We are members of the Reformed Church in America. We exist to glorify God, preach and teach the Bible alone, and spread the Gospel of Salvation in Jesus Christ Alone.
Worship is held every Sunday (D.V.) at 10:30 AM. Please call 973-373-4525 for our current schedule of events. The secretary is in the office on Thursdays from 10 AM to 12 PM.

Second Reformed Church History
July 10, 1910:
First Reformed Church of Irvington began a tent Sunday School at the corner of Florence & Tiffany. That fall a physical chapel was built. Rev. Uriah McClinchie, Rev. Patterson, & students from New Brunswick Theological Seminary shared leadership.
September 10, 1915:
The Chassis of Newark was approached about organizing a church, & permission was granted.
June 29, 1916:
Second Reformed Church was officially organized with 71 members.
November 4, 1916:
The corner of Elmwood & Florence Avenues was purchased.
June 15, 1917:
Rev. George Moore was installed as the first pastor.
March 30, 1918:
Ground was broken to build the present sanctuary. The total cost to build the sanctuary was $35,000.
June 8, 1920:
Rev. Charles B. Condit was installed as the second pastor.
March 30, 1920:
Reformed Church hymnals were purchased.
February, 1921:
The first manse was purchased at 22 Franklin Terrace.
June 20, 1922:
Rev. James B. Mulder was installed as the third pastor.
1922:
The first pipe organ was purchased.
1925:
The Education Building & Assembly Hall was erected to meet the increased membership needs.
November 18, 1939:
Rev. Moore resigned, & the church was served by stated supply & students for the next two years.
December 1, 1941:
Rev. Albert C. Freeman was installed as the fifth pastor.
He first led worship on December 7, 1941, as word of Pearl Harbor launched the United States into WWII. 128 men & women from our church served in the armed forces; eight of them gave their lives.
1941:
The manse on Franklin Terrace was sold & one at 825 Lyons Avenue was purchased.
1949:
A son of the church, J. Elmer Hauseman, was ordained.
1950:
The manse on Lyons Avenue was sold & one was purchased at 35 Ellery Avenue. The sanctuary was completely renovated during the summer. The sanctuary was rededicated on Reformation Sunday, October 29, 1950.
1953:
A son of the church, Donald A. McCabe, was ordainted.
1960:
A son of the church, Douglas C. Smith, was ordained.
1963:
Second Reformed Church became free of all indebtedness.
1974:
Rev. Thomas Reeves was installed as the sixth pastor.
1977:
A son of the church, James W. Adelmann, was ordainted.
1978:
Rev. Gregg A. Mast was installed as the seventh pastor.
During his tenuse, the manse on Ellery Avenue was sold & 101 Midland Boulevard was purchased as the new manse. He also the the renovations to the Fellowship Hall, turning two of the first level classrooms into a kitchen & bathroom. The Peppermint Players Theatre began renting our lower level, & Rev. Mast began an after school program.
1987:
Rev. Stephen Schwander was installed as the seventh pastor.
1991:
Rev. Andre Daley was installed as the eighth pastor.
During his tensure, a daycare was started in conjunction with the
after school program.
1999:
Rev. Peter A. Butler, Jr. was called to be the ninth pastor while yet a student; he was ordained & installed in 2004. During his tenure, he began regular biblical studies & returned the meeting of the Board of Elders.
2004:
The Peppermint Players, and the church after school program & daycare, all moved to new locations.
2013:
Rev. Dr Peter A. Butler, Jr. earned his doctorate from Drew Theological School.
2016:
For the 100th Anniversary of Second Reformed Church, we renovated the upstairs kitchen & bathroom; including the addition of an upstairs stove.
2018:
As Second Reformed Church embarks on their 103rd year of SERVICE in & to the Community of Irvington, we looking forward to welcoming YOU to Our spiritual hearth & home. YOU...are welcomed here.
