The History of Shawville United Church
Shawville United Church was established in 1834 as Shawville Methodist Church.
The cornerstone for the church was laid in 1890. The foundation and walls of the building survived a fire in 1906. The fire,which ultimately destroyed four village blocks, started west of the church in a bakery and entered the church through the window frames. The church walls withstood the fire and soon plans were made to rebuild using the old walls and foundations. The church was built similarly to the original one - the changes were to the church tower and the large north tower. Several memorial windows were installed at this time. The structure was rededicated in 1908.
The church was renovated inside and outside in 1923.
The Christian Education Wing of the church was added in 1962. This two story addition houses a large auditorium (complete with stage), the church office, choir room, kitchen, a parlour, a nursery, washrooms and the Thrift Shop.
The Shawville Methodist Church was renamed the Shawville United Church after the " Church Union " of 1925, when members of the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches of Canada joined to form the United Church of Canada. The lettering over the door "Shawville Methodist Church" was not changed to "Shawville United Church" until 1959.
According to an article in The Equity, the local newspaper, in 1955 Shawville United Church had the largest Protestant Congregation in the Pontiac.
In 1965, the congregations of the "Clarendon Circuit" churches of Yarm, Radford, and Wesley were included in the Shawville Pastoral Charge. St. Matthew's Church had been closed in 1960. Norman United Church was never officially closed. Memorial Services are held at each of these churches annually.

THE CHURCH WINDOWS
Special memorial windows were installed when the church was rebuilt after the fire of 1906. Pictures of the windows can be found in the Picture Gallery below.
The large window on the north end of the church was donated by Mr. G. F. Hodgins in memory of his father, James Hodgins, and his father-in-law Trueman Thomas.
The rosette window in the choir loft at the south end was donated by the Caldwell brothers in memory of their parents, William and Margaret Caldwell.
A window on the west side was donated by Francis Wilson in memory of his wife Isabella Pattyson; and on the east in memory of Francis Armstrong and his son James Armstrong.
In more recent times, four more windows have been installed.
In 1987, a window was installed on the east side in memory of Clarence Knox.
In 1995, a window commemorating Kathleen Hodgins' 72 years as organist was installed on hte east side.
A window in memory of the Nellis Stewart family was installed on the west side of the sanctuary in 2008.
The most recent window to be installed, in 2010, was placed by the CGIT to commemorate the 175th anniversary of Shawville United Church.
Canadian Girls in Training (CGIT)
The group known as the CGIT was organized in Canada in 1915. The earliest date on record for the CGIT at Shawville United Church was January 9, 1928. In the early years, the CGIT was affiliated with the Women's Missionary Society.
The CGIT presented the Baptismal Font which is used in the church. In 1957, in loving memory of one of its members, the CGIT donated communion plates. In 2010, the CGIT donated a stained glass window "To Become The Girl That God Would Have Me Be" to commmemorate the 175th anniversary of Shawville United Church.
