Who we are

St. Andrew’s has witnessed, celebrated, and spread the Good News about God in Tweed since 1890. We very much feel a part of the Tweed community as much today as we did back then.

We belong to the Presbyterian Church in Canada. This is a Canadian denomination belonging to the reformed branch of theology with a presbyterial church government structure. You can read about what this means in more detail here. Our foundational documents are (chronologically) The Westminster Confession of Faith, Declaration of Faith Concerning Church and Nation, and Living Faith. These documents can be found on the national office website link above. Living Faith is the most accessible of these documents for a new person looking to find out more about the Presbyterian Church in Canada and I recommend starting there.

Roslin St. Andrew’s is our sister church, about fifteen kilometers south on highway 37. Our minister oversees both churches in the pastoral charge and we collaborate with each other and support each other in many activities.

James 1:17

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Community Dinners

We were instrumental in beginning an ecumenical monthly pay-what-you-can community meal and continue to be involved – served at the Tweed Agricultural Hall.

Moira Place

Several members were on the planning board for Moira Place, our local nursing home, and we continue to be very involved in their life through music, visiting, and worship leading.

Food Bank

The food-bank began it’s life at St. Andrew’s and we continue to support it.

Inclusion – a blossoming conversation at St. Andrew’s. Topics and programs we are engaging in include:

Indigenous Reconciliation
Affordable and Inclusive Housing

Other activities & ministries

Music:

The choir sings a mix of contemporary and traditional songs nearly every Sunday.
We have organized the ecumenical community cantata for 30+ years.
A trio called Breath of Hope often sings in worship and in the community (eg/ The Festival of Trees).
Ladies Midweek Bible Study – for several years a midweek study with great depth has been held.

Presbyterian Women’s Association (PWA):

The PWA are recognized as strong fund-raisers and caterers.
They give much of what they raise to local community groups.
Each year they hold three very well-known and attended community events:
The Strawberry Lunch – a community meal followed by ice cream and local strawberries.
The Summer Celebration – a craft and plant sale on Canada Day Weekend.
Soup’s on & Bazaar – a craft sale and meal of soup and cocoa overlapping the Santa Claus parade. We invite people to watch from our lawn and steps.

Environmental Team

Teaching Garden Project – Senior loneliness and food insecurity are an epidemic. We received $12,619. from the federal government to build several accessible garden beds in order to combat both these problems. Unlike a typical community garden, participants care for the garden as a whole in an effort to bring people together socially and learn home food production practices. Produce is shared with the community and with the food bank in addition to being used to teach workshops on preparing and preserving the food we have grown.
Speaker Series – This series brings people together for information sharing. Food-production is a common theme but also other justice-oriented events such as the Kairos blanket exercise, media literacy, rural poverty, and market gardening.
Environmental Handbook – a book of practical tips and resources for environmental living.
Worship Walks – a worship service that meets a hike mixed with a biology lesson
Amish Visits – visits with our Amish sisters and brothers to learn less-impactful living practices.
Sunday Bible Study – in an effort to bring people into a deeper conversation a Bible study is held following Sunday coffee hour on the next week’s Bible passages.

Theology on Tap

a night to ask questions in an informal setting at the local pub.

Computer Club

a donation of quality used computers has inspired us to begin a computer club for youth in the community as an alternative to the usual activities like hockey.
