Who we are
Eleske Shrine (Beaver Indian Reserve)
With the help of the local people of the area, Father C. Mariman planned and constructed the Shrine, during the years 1944 to 1954.
Ingenuity made up for the lack of funds and equipment available for the project. St. Theresa's Hospital in Fort Vermilion, and Jimmy Jones, the first settler of High Level, contributed the cement for the construction of the Shrine. As the cement was left over from earlier building activities. It was old and hard packed. It required crushing by borrowed oat crusher, powered by a hand-made windmill. The only other tools used in the construction of the shrine included a few shovels, a wheel barrow, and a hand-made cart.
Stones for the Shrine were brought over from the other side of the river opposite the Shrine. Gravel for the Shrine was brought from Fort Vermilion and the Ponton River. Gravel brought from Fort Vermilion involved a two-day journey, by horse drawn wagon. All cement for the Shrine and side waIIs was hand-mixed.
The first pilgrimage to the Shrine took place September 8, 1945. A pilgrimage has taken place every year since 1945. Restoration of the Shrine began on June 16, 1979.
