St James Slaithwaite Service Times

Holy Communion

During 2020, St James’ (Slaithwaite) and St Bartholomew’s (Marsden), began a Home Church community which meet using a dial-in telephone line accessible from any ordinary home phone, as well as through smartphones, tablets and computers using the internet. Everyone is welcome to join us, but for cyber-security reasons you need to request the meeting details. These can be obtained from the Vicar in advance.

Home Church uses a form of liturgy which is simple and reflects the dispersed nature of our community. We gather together in Christ’s name, but remain physically separate so our worship is beginning to reflect that more closely. Jesus said, “For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” (Matt 18:20)… when we gather by smartphone, tablet, computer, or by regular home telephone, we truly are Church

In order to help with the setting at home, find somewhere unlikely to experience interruptions for the next 30 minutes. Light a candle, or a set a small lamp on a stand, something that brings to mind the idea of light shining in the world. You may want to get a small piece of bread for later in the service.

St James History

St James’ Church in Slaithwaite

The Church has stood in its present position, in the centre of the Village, from around 1789. Prior to this there was a church building nearer the river Colne, which was prone to flooding. When the current church was built, it was constructed in the form of a large chapel style building.

The bell tower was added twenty years after the initial construction, and later Victorian builders added the present pews and a beautiful tiered gallery to seat the growing population from the surrounding towns. The church clock, on top of the impressive west tower, has a fully working Westminster chime. This sounds the hour, every quarter and every half hour.

Internally there is a very large, well lit, worship space with a beautiful balcony that gives us the capacity of seating 950 people. Behind the pews we have a cafe style area and kitchen; we are able to host wonderful feasts for the community – as well as occasionally hosting post Wedding receptions.
