Welcome to St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Strathroy, Ontario and St. James Anglican Church in Parkhill, Ontario.
St. John the Evangelist
The congregation at St. John's gathers every Sunday at 11:00 a.m. to share the Eucharist together (Book of Alternate Services) under the guidance of our Priest and Rector, Karen Nelles, as we prepare ourselves to spread the message of God's love for humanity through the week. Our organist, Edit Haboczki, leads our choir and the congregation in Classical and more modern music on the fully refurbished pipe organ. Everyone is welcome to enjoy fellowship afterward over a light lunch (donations welcome) in our Parish Hall.

There is Sunday School every week in the Gathering Room for children ages 4 and up. Two adults staff each area under the direction of our Child and Family Program Coordinator, Kelly Fleming. Children are also welcome to sit with their family during the service.

St. John's celebrates Eucharist on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. according to the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) rite. Rev. Nelles also leads Anglican Eucharist at Strathmere Lodge on the first Thursday of the month at 10:30 a.m. and at Sprucedale Care Centre on the third Tuesday of the month at 2:30 p.m. unless there are extenuating circumstances.
Once a month, usually on the fourth Saturday at 5:00 p.m., St. John's observes an evening prayer service called Praise and Pizza. The Praise Band provides the music for this more contemporary service to the accompaniment of the congregation on maracas and other noise-makers

St. John the Evangelist History
In 1842, the original church site was granted by John S. Buchanan who had obtained the deed to 12,000 acres of pine forest along with water rights to the Sydenham River (formerly Bear Creek) from his uncle, James Buchanan, a British Consul in New York. John Buchanan was involved in the settlement of Adelaide Township, serving first as Reeve and later Warden of the Township. A chapel was constructed on what is now Head Street in Strathroy under the guidance of The Rev'd Dominic E. Blake, Rector of St. Ann's, Adelaide and was the first Anglican Church in the area.
In 1846, the original church building served for a time as the first school in the community. In 1859, under the leadership of The Rev'd A.S. Falls, the frame church was replaced by a brick structure which consisted of the nave of the present church.
In 1870, a brick rectory was build on the land adjacent to the church. The church was then enlarged with the addition of the Transepts in 1872 and then further enlarged by a chancel in 1874 under the direction of The Rev'd James Smythe.
The death of Ida May Hancock, a small child who died from burns from a large lighted lamp, resulted in the building of the first part of the church's own parish hall on Front Street. It opened on February 14th, 1904. In 1905, a choir room and vestry were added to the church.
The Rev'd George Pugsley became Rector in 1922 and under his leadership great accomplishments were achieved. A large addition was made to the parish hall, the church was redecorated, and the rectory renovated. A further extension was made to the parish hall in 1927.
The old rectory was demolished in 1954 and the present rectory was completed in the latter part of that year. A new parish hall adjoining the church was then dedicated on October 25th, 1961.
The interior of the church received a complete renovation in the summer of 1987 with new hardwood floors, painting of the walls, refinished pews and new carpeting. Three new stained glass windows (one in 1984 and two in 1989) were also dedicated.
In 1992, the sanctuary murals were restored in the chancel ceiling and, in 1997, the parish hall received a new tile floor, stage drapes, a kitchen island, and vertical blinds. In 1999, the high altar was removed from the wall and placed on a platform. This increased its height and made it freestanding. In 2000, the bell tower was rebuilt and restored.
